This does sound powerful enough for a next gen console and the parts make sense so this very well could be true

Though one of the most interesting rumors is the next xbox OS requiring 3 GB of RAM. Thats massive for a console

How would 1 even use 3gb of Ram for the OS? Windows and then what?

Windows 8, multiple actively running aps, full time always on Kinect functionality

Its certainly possible to use 3 GB for the OS.  Basically if true MS is probably not looking at the 360 as a gaming console at all is goin to have it be a full on media device to a level weve never seen from consoles.

How would backward compatibility work out with these specs? Possible or impossible?

From the article, "we find a bespoke GPU-like "Compute" module, designed to ease the burden on certain operations". So there's a custom chip in there, which sounds a lot like a cell processor. Could it be a cell for backward compatability? I hope so, it would be a smart move. I have no reason whatsoever to rush out and buy a PS4 when it's released, but if it played my PS3 games, i'd buy a PS4 day one.

and acording to today's article on IGN the ps4 will pack a 7670 and the nextbox will have a 6670 which are pretty much identical performance wise

That's OLD news

;)

512MB for PS4 OS seems low, but its not. The PS3 XMB has a footprint of less than 50MB.

No next gen console is using the 7670

I hate to be the Debbi Downer in this thread, but a lot of what Digital Foundry posted is still only rumors and speculation.

Well Wii U uses a GPU small than that lol.

Sounds powerful, but pretty affordable. That 4gig DDR5 ram is what will really set it apart from the Next Xbox.

"We also have hard data on Orbis's memory set-up. It features 4GB of GDDR5 - the ultra-fast RAM that typically ships with the latest PC graphics cards - with 512MB reserved for the operating system. This is in stark contrast to the much slower DDR3 that Durango will almost certainly ship with. Microsoft looks set to be using an offshoot of eDRAM technology connected to the graphics core to offset the bandwidth issues the use of DDR3 incurs. Volume of RAM is the key element in Durango's favour - there'll be 8GB in total, with a significant amount (two sources we've spoken to suggest 3GB in total) reserved for the OS"

lol his statement makes no sense to begin with. GDDR5 is a derivative of DDR3 and is meang for GPU use and has terrible timings.

For computing tasks and simple read and write access, DDR3 > GDDR5 any day.

well what are the benefits to having GDDR5? there has to be some kind of benefit there for them to use it

and everybody else seems to like the news of it having GDDR5 so wtf! lol

To be blunt, this is because people just don't know what they are talking about...

GDDR5 is based on DDR3 and is essentially DDR3 memory optimized for graphics where they increased the clockspeed at the cost of timings.

In fact, I think that they either made a mistake or this whole article is BS. Maybe they are using GDDR5 for graphics and then DDR3 for rest but I don't see how they would have any benefits from using GDDR5 for everything. More heat, more power usage, higher timings...makes no sense.

What does WiiU use? Sorry my memory is rusty...
