Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo can never win with some people..

Bottom line is people, Nintendo fan, X-Box fan, or otherwise, usually have some sort of bias, and seek to confirm that.

Conversation I had with a coworker-

Him: The Wii sucks. I haven't played my Wii all year.
Me: Why not?
Him: Nintendo doesn't make any games for real gamers.
Me: What kind of games are you looking for?
Him: Shooters, RPGs...
Me: Have you tried Xenoblade or the Last Story?
Him: No.
Me: Why not? They're two of the best RPGs in years.
Him: Because I never play my Wii.
Me: *Shake head and stop talking*.

Overcoming preconceptions is hard, and Nintendo is going to have a challenge there.

Some people will forever be ignorant. We can't change that, sadly.

You could be hardcore for one company though.

It goes both ways.  Nintendo's been around far longer than the other manufacturers on the market, though, so you could say if you're a hardcore Nintendo fan then you're a "true" hardcore gamer. ;)

They've out-lasted Sega, Atari Jaguar, Toshiba, Bandai WonderSwan, Neo Geo, and they're currently going more than toe-to-toe with Sony and Microsoft.  Pretty amazing they've lasted this long.

but recently the definition of hardcore is first person shooter...

i didnt even like medal of honor when i was younger XD

A hardcore gamer is a gaming hobbyist. They can have one or all consoles, just depends on how much you put in. A good amount of flexible income is spent on their gaming needs. Its as simple as that. They go to forums like you are now to talk to other gamers, or read gaming news and keep up with the latest gaming trends. They know about the developers and who they trust to make games for them. They have a taste for games, meaning they know good from bad just by habit of time teaching them proper mechanics.

No, thats just called a competitive gamer. Hardcore games are titles created for the hobbyist gamer who expects more from games story/lengthy gameplay/smart ai/ a challenge, etc.

Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword were not good Zelda games, and they were dumbed down pretty hard. Metroid Prime 3 was alright, but lacked exploration/ it was more of a shooter than an adveture. Metroid Other M is absolutely atrocius. No Star Fox or F-Zero. No Pikmin. Super Paper Mario was extremely disappointing coming of Thousand Year Door. Brawl was worse than Melee. NSMBWii was uninspired.

The Galaxy games and DKCR were excellent, but really, besides those, I didn't LOVE anything on the Wii.

I must disagree with almost everything you said... Both TP and SS were epic and GREAT games, both in their own right. NSMBwii were awesome; I've never had more fun playing a 2D Mario since I enjoyed it immensely with my GF, and both Galaxy games are about the best platformers I've played... Mario Kart was also such a fun and awesome title!!

In short, the Wii was a great and a really fun console. Definitely one of the best there ever was, and much is thanks due to the controls!

The problem is partially Nintendos fault and it can have many factors:

- Kiddy image: Microsofts statement that gamers grow up with Nintendo but will graduate to other consoles.
- Not being worried about western means of what makes a game next gen like powerful processors. Being behind hinders third parties in the west from wanting to make games for them on par with the competition.
- The advent of Xbox Live and the Playstation network for the competitive gamer.
- The third party drought that has been going onfor twenty years since the Playstation first arrived. Half the reason the N64 & Gamecube didnt sell that well.
- Nintendo has given up on going head to head with the competition, so they go around them. Even this gen, thats what they are doing.
- Nintendo wont drop the family image they hold onto. Nintendo is a traditionally family company and those who buy their product need to be realistic and realize that. They let the third parties and former second parties do the dirty games for them.
- They refuse to share the playing field with their gamers whom have grown up. No relatable first party for older players. If they want to get that, they have to go to third party. Where as with Sony you get both kiddy, teen and mature characters all in one breath. They refuse to grow up with the older gamers who grew with them.

Nintendo holds a place in all of our hearts, but the problem with Nintendo is an internal one. They chose not to pander to the casuals and for that they will sell half of what the Wii Sold. They need to learn how to satisfy both markets from the start.

This is all very legit reasons and something Nintendo should look in to! Just look at Disney; THE most family oriented company of, like, all time! And still they're catering to all kinds of tastes. Nintendo should really try and learn from Disney.

I have no problem with Nintendo being protective of its and its desire to appeal to the family and amateur gamers. I just wish Nintendo would realize it can develop/publish "mature" games without taking any sort of hit to its family image whatsoever. It published Eternal Darkness, Geist and Perfect Dark without taking a single hit. Remember it also helped fund and marketConkers Bad Fur Day; that game practically leans on the M/AO rating!

I'm not crying for Nintendo to suddenly make Mario cap people in the head in first person or Link pick up Hylian hookers and use swear words, but I just wish it would pull more Bayo 2's where it swoops in and picks up a game we all want without worrying about blood and cleavage levels.

Yeah, I think we're on the same page here! They could open up a subsidiary that make and publish "mature" games, or they could simply pay other studios to make them, like they do with Bayo2. Disney is about as family oriented as it gets, and even they have franchises that appeal to adults (Star Wars, Marvel etc). Nintendo needs to have that as well

Agreed.

I..... I .. I can't even read that without vomiting a bit in my mouth.

Nintendo compromises their consoles to cater to the part of the market which doesn't care so much about their games. The core gamers don't care if the console is bigger or obtrusive and they certainly don't really care for displaying a whole game on the side screen as a main attraction for a console. Nintendo spent a lot of money and directed a lot of their attention/effort away from areas which the core gamers appreciated. So if I was to buy a Wii U I would have to pay for their Wii backwards compatibility and their streaming/encoding system which I don't particularly care about as well as their packaging of the console into a small space with a low power consumption which I again don't care about. Had they come out with a console which was bigger, used the touch screen as a basic menu and was more powerful for the same price then I would be a lot more receptive to it.

In relationship terms it's like ignoring your best friend who is a girl that is madly in love with you because you're assuming she will always be there and going after some fickle girl who just really isn't that into you.

If the 'casual'/non core gamers aren't into the Wii U then they have produced a badly compromised system which satisfies noone. They can't give the core gamers what they want and if the casual gamers don't pick up on the Wii then they have effectively lost both. The core gamers aren't going to stick around forever and they haven't as we have seen with a lot of them moving on to other systems. The Wii was a great opportunity because the PS2 outright sucked for a lot of gamers as the controls were difficult, the frame-rates were wonky and low and the controller was a little unresponsive at times. A lot of people got the Wii because the PS2 wasn't that great for the non core gamers so the real question is whether or not these people also got burnt by the Wii. The PS3 is a lot better than the PS2 and the games are considerably better made, the same applies to the 360 so the window of opportunity there has effectively closed.

Tease.
