Forums - Sales - Wii U sold less than PS3 in US December at Launch. What do you think about?

WTF?

DOOMED 28 33.33%

FAIL 12 14.29%

PS3 AMAZING 43 51.19%

Total:83

Just realised:

Xbox 360 US Launch (Nov+Dec): 607k
PS3 US Launch (Nov+Dec): 687k
Wii U US Launch (Nov+Dec): 890k

Hmmm.... makes me reconsider, it's not bad actually.

Anyone else find it funny that Sony fans are bashing a console for a slow start?

that's precisely the point.  Nintendo fans are getting a taste of their own medicine and with the system that did every possible thing to dissuade early adopters (super duper high price, no big exclusives, supply contrain)

And that's why the internet gaming community is a piece of crap. We can't enjoy games, we most start this revenge nonsense...

It will be funny when the Wii U will be the best selling console next year when the masses session the 720 and PS4 will be $500 each. Only reason it is doing so bad right now is because Xbox and Playstation are so cheap. Next year when the expensive competition comes out Nintendo will seriously start to market is thing- I suppose this is the reason why Nintendo is marketing as much right now.

There will still be PS3's and 360's on the market when the real next gen systems come out so I don't understand your point. Plus they will most likely both get a price drop which further increases competition for the Wii U. PLUS there will be more consoles on the market which creates MORE competition. I don't understand your logic. Why would the Wii U start to sell when current gen systems are available at a lower price and next gen systems are also available....???

I think these sales are definitely worrying. The Wii U has an advantage over the PS3 in basically every practical category: Price, games, and competition. The Wii U has an advantage in all three of those factors. For it to even be close to the PS3 is very worrying.

Hmm. So the first full month of the PS3 outperformed the first full month of the Wii U in a specific market. Leaving out any possible causes such as the extremely limited supply of PS3s during November, as opposed to the well-stocked Wii U launch, I must assume that the PS3 had the more successful launch in the US. Not leaving such factors out would make my a fanboy or fanboy equivalent, wouldn't it?

I give this thread a bronze trophy for actually succeeding in making people disappointed, spin or not.

On the brighter spot Wii U launch > Vita

Wii U launch > PS3 or 360 would probably be a better argument.

Because it will be the cheapest next gen console. People in the casual market who already own a 360 and Ps3 who want to get the "new thing will get the Wii U. I suppose may be wrong. We'll see.

*WiiU is $300/350

As I said in the thread, a short-term failure does not mean long-term doom. Sure, it's far from ideal to have a poor start but it really means nothing in the grand scheme of things. The 3DS is a pretty great example of this. A lackluster start, yes, but then Nintendo announced big hitting games, dropped the price to cover off their rival arriving in the market, and as such the 3DS has gone from strength to strength whilst their rival well...hasn't.

I expect a similar scenario for the WiiU this coming Christmas. Release big games (Mario, Zelda, Smash Bros.?), drop the price so it's $100-150 below their cheapest rival and you've got yourself a winner.

Trying to "spin" the first month's sales either way is pretty nonsensical when there's nothing to compare it to, especially when you have no idea of it's long-term performance.

I don't think this is "spin" at all. It's fairly agreed here that the PS3 had a horrible launch even considering its price and lack of software. So for the Wii U to sell even less than the PS3 at launch is very shocking. Not only is it surprising for it to sell less than the PS3, but it did so while being much less expensive and it launched with one of Nintendo's biggest IPs. This is quite surprising and is definitely worth discussing imo.

I do agree though that its nonsensical to call the console doomed or make any declarations on the console's entire life. But the tone of your post comes across as if you're dismissing the topic altogether, which I'm sure most people disagree with.

It's very late now so I'll keep this to-the-point for now. The PS3 had a much better launch in US than the 360 (which is MicrosoftLand), and a far, far better one in Europe an Japan obviously (see below).

Xbox 360 US Launch (Nov+Dec): 607k
PS3 US Launch (Nov+Dec): 687k
Wii U US Launch (Nov+Dec): 890k

I don't buy that argument about the PS3 launch. It was very good when compared to its competition, but it dropped off somewhat quickly due to the high price, as the Vita did. However, Sony turned that around but this is not the discussion.

I'm not dismissing the fact that WiiU should have passed 1mil at this point (my US expectation was 985k, for reference). As you say, Mario could have and should have pushed more systems. It's slightly disappointing, even. But, as has been said, one month means nothing in a 5-7 year console cycle, especially when you have no direct competition to compare it to.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

How is the Wii U launch worse? Are we suddenly forgetting that both consoles launched in November? Or that the small supply of PS3s artificially drove up demand in the following months? As it stands, Wii U's numbers in 2013 still easily trump the PS3's 2006 numbers.

You honestly think the nextbox/PS will hit $500? No chance in hell. I'm thinking $399
