I just added an edit to my post to clarify I don't actually have a problem with the actual visual design of the fire starter. In fact it's the best of the three IMO. I just don't see the point of so many retreads on the same theme.

There's only so many animals out there. You can rule out any which are associated with water, as can anything in the jungle. And if Okami has taught me anything, it's that the Sun and Fire and closely linked to Dogs/Wolves/Foxes in Japanese tradition. So I guess it makes sense.
But it'll be the other 150-odd Pokemon that will make or break this game, not the opening three.

The starters should idealy be the best work as it's the first thing you see, and most people stick with their starters through the game. Tho the later evo designs may well be much better. Pokemon designs are always a mixed bag anyway.
There are still plenty of themes that they have surprisingly not covered yet, and they are not limited to animals to base pokemon on. The fire lizard for example, why is there still not a Dragon/Fire pokemon that looks like a lizard? Big cats are often associated with the fire ellement in many myths, Lions are linked with the Sun, and tigger etc have also been linked. There are also many fire serpents and scorpians in myths as well.
There is still no proper Dolphin pokemon ether so far which always boggles my mind.
