i'm not convinced that so many sales come from downloads in japan like others here. The game was sold out badly for a while, and people were forced to download it because of that. Also we know many of the people bought the download cards, they were probably trying to buy the physical copy and couldn't get it.

It seems like in Japan it was released on the N64 and then ported to the Gamecube for other regions.
