Forums - Sony - Sony's chances of going bankrupt in the next two years

Sony going bankrupt- possible but very unlikely
Sony going to get smaller and leave some buisness ( Tv buisness for an esample): very likely
Sony going to expand: very likely even if the get smaller there will come a time where they will get bigger again.

Sony is so big and has so many buisness categorys- some of them will always work.

I think they will file for bankruptcy protection, and they will emerge as a stronger company because of it (at least in terms of gaming) ...

Look at the PS-Vita. At the moment it is struggling and it could benefit from a price cut and substantial money invested in exclusive game development but in their current financial shape Sony can't afford to do anything; and they seem to be waiting until production costs fall to a level where they can justify a price cut. Having abysmal sales for 18 to 24 months before you do anything about it is not a good strategy for having a successful platform.

Looking into the future, Sony probably can't afford much in the way of initial losses from the platform and may need to take a page out of Nintendo's book and sell the PS4 at a price where it is profitable with 1 or 2 game sales. This is a major departure for Sony, and the question becomes whether Sony will be releasing a system with modest processing power at an affordable price, or will Sony be releasing a powerful system at a premium price?

Realistically, neither seems like it would be that popular with Sony's audience.

If their debt is restructured, and Sony can eliminate unprofitable divisions, they could probably be much more agressive with their strategies; and this would likely make them more competitive in their gaming division.

Unfortunately, if they wait too long to go into bankruptcy protection the Playstation division might be one of the divisions on the block. If they can't "fix" the PS-Vita, and the PS4 sells at a similar rate, I can't help but think that their Gaming division could be seen as something that loses a lot of money and doesn't really bring in much benefit anymore.

Why is Sony still trying to produce TV's? Its clearly a huge liability to them now. Do they still think the Bravia TV brand will help them make profits? They should just sell their TV business to Samsung or LG and then perhaps they will become a healthier company.

I think in two years Sony will be history, perhaps some parts of Sony survive, but the playstation brand will be gone. Face the facts the "Playstation" is not a big name anymore. 10 years ago it was the synonyme for consoles for many people, and perhaps better recognized as "nintendo" but today the playstation brand has lost its recognition value.

The PS3 has lost billions of dollar and is the third (last) place in the current consoles cycle. The PSP got only popular in Japan. PSP redesigns like the PSPgo were big flops. The Vita is a worldwide flop. With the very cheap look-and-feel of the last PS3 redesign Sony hurts the playstation brand brand even brown.

Sonys gaming division loses money every year since six years. There has been some marginally profitable quarters but overall the gaming division burned billions of dollars.

If (to be honest it is not an "if", IT WILL HAPPEN only the point in time in the next two years is unknown) Sonys is a the end and will be liquidated the gaming division will be one part that will get not many attention. It not has lost as many money as other parts of Sony but it has lost money always. There will be not many interest to continue the playstation brand because obviously there is no future for the PS4 without investing billions of dollars. But with PS3 and Vita already money burner no investors would raise an eyebrow for this. Perhaps the brand will be sold and use for other technical things (like brands like "commodore" and "atari" has been) a few years after commodore (C64, AMIGA) collapsed.

And it will not suddenly turn out good in the end. Face the facts, Sony is at the end of its history and will be liquidated soon. Many people already wrote facts based articles (me too: http://www.zimmer101.de/wiiu-spiele/sonys-niedergang.html ). Even so I prefer Nintendo games I feel bad about Sonys slow death. In the next ten years we will see if and how Microsoft and Nintendo survive.

Right so playstation isn't a big name anymore. Yet the ps3 still managed to outsell the 360 in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012, and the wii for the past 2 years. Despite launching at $600 and over a year later than the 360 its on the verge of passing it. You tell me how that's a brand that's lost all its recognition value.

I'd ignore him.  He's just talking out his butt.  No console has survived for 6 years releasing at the disadvantages of the PS3, let alone making it to over 70M sold and most likely reaching over 90M sold.  Hell, I doubt any of them reached 10M sold.  The major reason the PS3 was allowed to stay alive long enough for Sony to right the ship is because of the Playstation brand.  And next year, when Sony launches without the time and cost disadvantage, we should see the Playstation brand in good spirits again.  He's also dead wrong about Sony still losing money in their gaming department and finishing 3rd this gen.

As shown in the OT it is extremely doubtful that sony will be going anywhere.  them being downgraded earlier this year may change their strategies but beyind that they are fine.  As far as the Vita, don't quote me on this but I'm pretty sure it is profitable.  Within a year or 3 it will be making have gained all the money that they put into it.  A business is not here to say we sold the most, but it is here to......The secret word is, you guessed it, profits.

Sony will continue to lose money but the Japanese gov will not allow them to fall. Sony is one of those companies IMO that will never go down.

MS fans really get the itch to comment negatively on sony, then lament why they don't have many people (ms fans) supporting their trolling act.
On topic, sorry doomsayers and haters, sony isn't going anywhere. They have divisions that fetch enormous profits, like sony pictures, financials, even ps brand is the most profitable gaming brand right now (check latest figures, sony ps division has a operating profit of 29million $, while ms has 19m). If the worst comes, they could just leave the TV market and earn billions again.
To see how good sony pictures is performing, see this-

Again, get your facts straight ms fans.

Without the Dreamworks Animation numbers Paramount numbers would be horrible and they should do worse next year World War Z doen't look that good and Dreamworks Animation will be distibuted by 20 Century Fox for the next five years starting early next year.  I think that Bunea Vista (Disney) will be on top next year due to Iron Man 3 and the next Thor movie but they also have a good change to have another big budget bomb with The Lone Ranger.
