No way. Nathan Drake is way too generic and isn't from a popular enough franchise to be the mascot. You're so quick to assume Uncharted is the most popular using Vgchartz's numbers but if you had a clue you'd know it is Sony's most bundled franchise ever and wouldn't be half as big as it is without being given away for free with millions of PS3's.

A mascot has to be a easily distinguishable character from an acclaimed and popular series. That is why Kratos is Sony's mascot because none of the others come close.

God of War is a much bigger franchise than Uncharted, the sell on average 5 million and they DON'T need to be bundled at all to reach those numbers. Averaging across all the games God of War is also the most critically acclaimed franchise Sony had. Kratos is easily recognisable and he is by far the most popular and beloved character Sony has, he has also appeared in the most games outside of his franchise than any other Playstation character and has been parodied in many games and on TV on an episode of The Simpsons. All of Sony's characters combined haven't been tattooed on people's bodies as much as Kratos alone has, how many people have you seen have a Nathan Drake tattoo? I've seen not a single one and probably never will.

Proof that regardless of Uncharted's massively bundled sales according to Vgchartz God of War is a far more popular and beloved franchise and Kratos is A LOT more popular than Nathan Drake.

 God of War (3,940,000 fans ) - https://www.facebook.com/godofwar.page?fref=ts

Uncharted (525,000 fans ) - https://www.facebook.com/pages/Uncharted-2/111738242177766?fref=ts

Kratos is undeniably Sony's mascot. Next generation will bring about new potential mascots but Nathan Drake will never qualify no matter how much you Uncharted fans hope he will or even think he already does, as long as the Uncharted games need to be massively bundled by Sony in an attempt to artificially make them popular and relevant as opposed to God of War where us the gamers have made it popular it will never be Sony's key franchise and Nathan Drake will never be even half as popular and beloved as Kratos.

Sorry, but uncharted is bigger then god of war.

It's also more accessable, and it's sony's only franchise that appeals to all gamers.

Is it ok that I skipped JustThatGamer's post? Because I'm just going to assume that he slagged Drake and plugged Kratos. Tell me if I'm wrong. Of course, that being said, I think he's right in that Kratos is a LOT more distinctive.

OT, I voted "nobody". A mascot isn't needed. It's not like Sony has a Mario-like character that they sprinkle around in a bunch of unrelated games. Sony's staple is variety, which kind of voids the idea of a mascot character.

I'd also argue that Xbox doesn't really have one, either. No one outside people who play Halo (or read forums) knows Master Chief. He looks kind of like a Generic Space Fighter Guy, which is propagated immensely by those really goofy GameStop commercials where it shows a bunch of them running around looking awkward.

Nathan Drake is not a good choice since from what I gather he's a mass murderer. The same could be argued about Master Chief but the difference is he's killing aliens to save mankind and in some cases all life in the Galaxy while Nathan Drake kills people in pursuit of treasure.

Drake kills brown people or pirates, which are essentially aliens on the "is the public offended by this" scale.

Nobody take that the wrong way please, I'm not saying it's right, just saying that there wouldn't be some outrage by the public if he reached Chief's popularity.

I dont think thats quite it. There is a level of hipocrisy when it comes to games compared with other mediums. If you look at movies, your regular action heroes (Arnie, Stallone, Bruce Willis etc) slice and dice their way through tons of bad guys but no one considers it wrong. Look at Kill Bill one of the most violent movies ever created (imo). You dont see people going on about how these heroes are bad. However I have seen numerous threads/posts/articles about how Drake is a murderer. Well fucking boo hoo. Drake is always outnumbered is never (or at least rarely?) the instigator of any of the fights he is thrust into - I personally dont have a problem with him killing every enemy he comes into since he is saving himself or his friends.

You're 100% right. I read it but before hand, I felt like I already knew what it said. Should have listened to myself.

OT: Their next mascot is obviously Iota.

4 ≈ One

Well as usual Just Thats Gamers bias about Uncharted is getting to make me laugh once again.

So in the PS1 time i associate two maskots with Playstation: Crash and Spyro
In PS2 times: Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter,Sly and Kratos ( of course thes mascots werent as big as Crash to be fair)
In PS3 time: Kratos, Drake, Sackboy

With that beeing said i dont think that only having one big maskot is the right decision. Think abou it what will happen to Nintendo if people slowly starting to loose interest in mario.( of cours that wont happend over night).
Of course mario is a big money maker and sells a shitloads of consoles but if people really will loose interest sometimes in the mario brand than that would be a financial disaster for them. The same goes for Microsoft if people loose interest in halo and Master Chief.

I think its better two have more than just one maskot or game associatet with the brand. Better to have two or three big mascots than only have one super big maskot. Thats how i see it.

For the PS4: I do think that Drake and Kartos will be there for sure and each of them has agreat chance to become bigger as the fans wanted more of them and of course sony knows that and will support this IP well.

But i am not really sure if Sackboy will be there. The next step for Sackboy would be 3d levels but willthis automatically grow the series- i dont know.

Maybe ( and i hoping it will happen) Sony have brought back Crash bandicoot and we didnt know it. Woule be awesome if he will make a comeback with the PS4.

Otherwise i think Sony will have a fairly good chance of creating a new maskot with next gen like they did with Drake and Uncharted with the PS3.

I am surprised that Sony fans don't know about Sony cats.

Well, Toro and Kuro are more of SCEJ's mascots than the PlayStation's mascot.

Well I think they tried to make Sackboy their mascot this generation because they did a bit of marketing with him and they made a few spinoff games within the same universe.

Tease.

Aside from Nintendo, where mascots are expected to re appear, mascots don't matter anymore. With the Playstation brand, people want to play new and exciting IP's. Look at the Last of Us, there is a lot of buzz surrounding that game. Sony doesn't need to have a Mario, and they shouldn't try that, they should just keep establishing new, and exciting titles.
