I disagree ...

While I think there is some value in comparing sales generation-over-generation to argue whether a system was a success or not, a system's sales are strong or weak regardless of how their previous generation system sold.

The PS-Vita is selling poorly because it is selling at a rate of less than 5 million units per year, not because it is selling at half the rate of the PSP. The XBox 360's sales in Japan are poor because it will (likely) have sold less than 2 million units after being on the market for 8+ years, even though the XBox 360 sold far more units in Japan than the XBox did.

You can disagree as much as your heart desires, but that does not change the fact that the success of a product is measured against its predecessor.

offtopic rant: why on earth I decided to take just an android tablet with me for vacation. This sucks.. chrome at least lets you edit the post, awesome...

What a bizarre way of looking at things, I would be interested to know what your grades were like in school after all a D- average is an amazing acomplishment if your previous year's average was a F; and an A- average is an amazing failure if in the previous year you had an A average.

I wonder if you will use a similar way to judge whether a system is powerful, and if the Wii U has a bigger relative increase in processing power than the PS4 or XBox 720 is whether you will call out those systems for not being powerful enough.

Also, did you not notice that I was talking about direct successor. Not past glory.

Actually you are indeed comparing the past glory of a direct successor...

Your problem, of course, is that you are basing the state of the WiiU by only one single metric: how it is doing compared to its predecessor. While that's certainly one thing to consider, you are conveniently ignoring other factors such as the fact that it's $50 to $100 dollars more expensive, launched in a worse economy, is tracking above the 360 and PS3 launches, and that it will finish the year not too far behind the Wii itself, which frankly, was an anomoly of success.

As HappyS pointed out earlier, the Vita is not being judged so much because it's tracking behind the PSP, but because it's doing badly in any context. And the 360 certainly did better than its predecessor in Japan but was still a failure in that region.

Many people believe that WiiU won't sell as much as the Wii did, same way the 3DS won't sell as much as its predecessor. That may show decline from the previous gen, but it's not the only way to gauge success. By that flawed rationale, Sony will never have another successful console since they will never outsell the PS2.

Yup, pretty much this ^^

On the topic of success vs a previous version, if Usain Bolt ran 100M in 10.3 seconds he would consider that a failure even though noone here could match that. It is possible to have a successful product which is a failure and a failed product which can be called a success. It is possible for Nintendo to say sell 50M consoles and make a billion dollar profit and get called a failure and that could be because they lost the market lead, lost market share and had their overall revenue shrink even if at the end of the day as a stand alone it could be called a success.

Tease.

I see a lot of arguments, and some make sense, some don't. But the fact of the matter is, The Wii U has sold a good amount of systems. Whether this is a indicator of the future? Who knows! But give credit where credit is due, it's doing well. If it doesn't make improvements to the system as well as the software, it won't carry on like this. If they produce the games and push the Wii U to it's potential, I doubt Nintendo will have any problem selling systems.

As for reaching 6 million sold. I feel that goal will be very difficult to accomplish. But that goal is difficult for many systems to accomplish. I think in the long run, they will be a lot more successful. And this is ONLY if they get the Third-Party support they need and they release a good amount of 1st party games. The Wii U is a very interesting system that has a lot of potential. I hope Nintendo reaches that potential.

I, for one, know that I will NEVER buy a WiiU but damn its games look AWESOME.

Back to the topic. I think its doing great. Better launches compared to the 360 and Ps3. And I think thats a big feat.

Yay!!!

Well i totally agree. A lot of Wii U future success depending on how much suppoirt it will get and what Microsoft and Sony will over for thge next gen. Right now its impossible to judge if the Wii U will be a failure or a success. Only time will tell us the answer.

May i ask why you won't buy one?

Just curious

Bet with ninjablade:

Ninjablade wins if the next 5 multiplat on the wii u are inferior to the 360 version.

I win if one of the 5 mulitplats are on par or superior on the Wii U.

Nintendo's 1st half seems to be centred around Wii Fit U selling systems, and I think the time for that game has passed (much like Brain Training and Nintendogs). I don't think women are going to pay $300+ just to play another Wii Fit when they already have the first/second one on the Wii (probably not being used regularly).

Rayman, Wonderful 101, and Pikmin 3 are alright but I don't think they will move many systems, just sell to the existing Nintendo base.

My feeling is Nintendo will hit the panic button in the summer like the 3DS if sales sputter in the 1st half of 2013 and drop the price and then unveil a ton of Mario for fall 2013 (Mario Universe, Mario Kart U).

Yeah, I agree pretty much with everything except the last bit... I don't think Nintendo will panic come summer; I'm expecting a new announcement in the beginning of the new year, or at the very least a tease of an upcoming game

I must disagree z101:

Pikmin 3: Will drive some systems but will not have a mario like effekt.
Monster Hunter: Big in Japan but not so in the rest of the world. Plus its a port from Monster Hunter 3.
Lego City Stories: New IP: Will it drive many systems or will only Wii U existing Wii u owenmers buy that game.
Aliens: Multiplat. You cant get it for X360 and pS3 plus its no system seller.
Rayman Legends: Greast game but not a big game.

The onyl game i can see selling some systems right now is Wii U Fit but how will this work with that fat controller?

id say thats quite a spot on analyisis of the up coming year for nintendo and the games releasing then. they dont have really big system seller, even though all those games surely will all be good, but they wont push many systems...

what nintendo must do is to show us something that makes it worthwhile to get a wii u. they need to show some amazing bayo2 footage, or an unannounced game that will blow our minds. i guess well find out during the next nintendo direct!

While I agree that none of those games are system sellers, what they do is reinforce the notion that the console is worth to have and that it has provide the console with games that while individually won't sell the system

It's true that none of those games are systems sellers, but it's also true that any console needs this kind of games. They are the games that, when that special game (call it system seller or not) launches and you think of buying the console, make you think "oh, and there's also X and Y game".

They are the ones that tip the scales in favor of buying the console.

Oh, I agree 100% with  you. They're all necessary for the Wii U, but it also needs a systems seller in spring... I think we'll get an announcement during January/February.
