On the topic of success vs a previous version, if Usain Bolt ran 100M in 10.3 seconds he would consider that a failure even though noone here could match that. It is possible to have a successful product which is a failure and a failed product which can be called a success. It is possible for Nintendo to say sell 50M consoles and make a billion dollar profit and get called a failure and that could be because they lost the market lead, lost market share and had their overall revenue shrink even if at the end of the day as a stand alone it could be called a success.
