Only if PS3 continues to sell for at least 1 holiday more than 360. Which means it won't overtake 360 in any way that could be said to be meaningful for the consolez warz.

If the Xbox 360 is still in 2nd place when the first next generation console from either Microsoft or Sony is released I'm calling it 1. Wii, 2. 360, 3. PS3. There is a chance that 2nd place may officially go to the 360.

I believe the next gen starts when the first one releases aka now. But the Sony guys tend to plead that it truly starts when MS and Sony follow suit. Thats cool, since 360 can easily hold out 1 more year.

I would say next gen has started, but this 7th gen isn't over until every console has been disontinued.  6th gen is still going until PS2 stops being made.  It has sold 150 million, not 100 million which is how everyone will remember down the road.  SNES beat Genesis even though it took awhile to do so and could be called "irrelevant" but that's what the numbers now show.

I remember reading in 2006-08 on the sites that I used to frequent that the PS3 would pass the 360 'soon' and it would result in multiplatform games being developed with the PS3 as the lead platform, and it would see the PS3 get the third party exclusives it 'deserves'.

I think it's safe to say that it's far too late for that to happen, and is thus irrelevant, as it was more what was to follow the passing which was being anticipated instead of the simple achievement of passing the 360 itself.

The console would have "won" the long run sure, but when those consoles were current and relevant in the eyes of the gamers, who was winning at time will be more remembered IMO.

Agreed. If it does eventually pass the 360 does it count? Say im in my car (360) racing someone (ps3) and I take my foot off the accellerator, get out, go in another car and go to another race, sure, you "won" but to everyone on the outside it will seem like I just couldn't e bothered with you and I already won by getting in a new car. i'm doubtful of 2013-2015. i just don't see 360 declining enough for that to happen. maybe 2015 pending Sony PS3 sales stay 1m a head of 360.

yea by the by. PS3 finished 600k a head of 360 for 2012.

even if it sells more software too?  I count every console sold in a generation.  By your logic 50 million PS2s don't count.  That's an awful lot of sales to discount.  If a console has lasting value and can continue to sell even when superior hardware is out.  I believe that speaks to its software and the lasting value of the library and that is something it deserves to be recognized for.  Besides 360 got a year head start on PS3 so it's only fair to give PS3 a year after 360 disontinues to catch up or pass before we declare a winner.
