Forums - Gaming - Valve’s Gabe Newell expects living room PCs to compete with next-gen consoles

Things are converging. WiiU is a very capable browser, message board, youtube watcher. Like Tablets and smartphones, it can do what a lot of people use their PC's for. PC's will naturally move toward the living room to stand their ground.

Hmmm, just had a random thought. Has Microsoft given any hint of possibly linking the Surface to a TV? Like Apple TV?

I don't see this taking off anytime soon.

Streaming to tv could work as pc being used as a hub. A steambox? No dont think so. Just make an app that pulls it form pc.

Sounds like some steam boxes could be comming next year. I wonder if they will be running linux and boot straight into Steam big picture

Considering how mini and micro atx are coming on really well, as well as some great cases, I think that idea of linux boxes logging straight into Big Picture is the way forward.

I agree with Gaben
The moment PC's become common to hook up to TV's most consoles are obsolete.

I LOVE ICELAND!

Gabe just told what is already obvious .

These "Living Room PCs" are what sony and Microsoft are trying to make their consoles be, right ?

the device will do pretty good in sales i believe, but it wont stand a chance against the consoles. pc games do not have the major name brand games to go against nintendo and sony/microsoft. just my opinion

Diablo, Half-life, Starcraft, WOW and a few others are bigger than most console exclusives. Though these wouldn't really push Gabecube sales since HL3 is the only one with any chance of exclusivity, and I doubt that would be exclusive... you're probably right. It won't be able to compete with consoles, but it probably isn't aiming to either.
