Forums - Gaming - Valve’s Gabe Newell expects living room PCs to compete with next-gen consoles

the device will do pretty good in sales i believe, but it wont stand a chance against the consoles. pc games do not have the major name brand games to go against nintendo and sony/microsoft. just my opinion

Sure they won't get a handful of exclusives, yet, but in the future they will, such as Star Citizen. The power gap between consoles and PC's will only grow larger and companies are already stating that what they want in terms of specs is only really achievable in PC's e.g. UE4 on Keplar.

I don't see this taking off anytime soon.

Maybe because it isn't out yet, I dunno?

Lol you don't think i meant once it comes out?

If those small htpc:s with decent components will be sold in a lot of stores for a price similar to consoles, they might compete with consoles. If there is no games at store shelves, I doubt steambox would generate much interest in general population.

For example, I have a decent htpc and I have not played any games with it. I will be trying that new steam big screen, some day. I swear!

I'm just wondering what you base that on, because they sure as hell haven't revealed it. Wasn't the biggest argument for console gaming vs. PC that it is easier to hook up and play?

I just think consoles are more established as apart of the living room environment and I don't think whatever they have planned for next year will take off next year.

true story .. my father in law bought geek squad to have them install his blu ray player.

...all i'm saying is any PC streamlined enough to just plug into a TV and play at a level the masses can understand is no longer a PC. it's a console. and i don't expect many PC enthusiasts to be willing to accept those kinds of compromises the their performance. so who is the market?

I think it is a lot of BS. Just put your computer in your living room, add a big screen HD Tv has anybdy has nowadays OR use occasionally a projector like I do and you have already a living room PC.

Gabe's reinventing the wheel.

No thank you ,not for me . will stick w/ my console of choice.

Except it plays all PC games...

I guess you could call it a consolized PC, but Valve clearly aren't aiming for the hardcore PC gaming crowd here. They're aiming for the console market.

pc doesn't have many exclusives that sit well with the plug in and play model though.  the good ones need keyboard and mouse so what's the point hooking it up to a tv?

i dunno.  about 8 years ago i tried to hook up my pc to my tv.  things didn't work out well at that time.  i'm sure things have gotten much better but thing is...ps360 already do so much that my need for a living room PC kinda died away.  i can browse the interwebs.  i can check my email.  i can watch netflix.  i can view my photos.  ..and i fully expect the next playstation and xbox to do even more and do it even easier and i'd wager apple is in the space real soon as well.  the idea was a great idea 10 years ago.  now...  it just feels too late imo.

Average steam account has 73 games.
Total of 54 million accounts.
One account for pc and steambox seems nice. Mods are also interesting. Would be nice to have every two years an upgrade.

geeksquad also has a service to set up your home console systems (ps3, xbox 360, wii, wiiU) also so I dont see the difference. Some people just dont want to do anyhting themsleves.
