nintendo can push with the full weight the the marketing resources they have available to them. but marketing resources are finite.

the difference is the wii, much like apple's products in general, was a pull. "word of mouth" is what i believe people like to call it here.  i 100% guarantee that the 20 minute apple ad story i saw on rock center last night didn't cost apple a thing.  wii had that too.  everyone was talking.  nintendo didn't have to do a thing.

Definitely true. Wii had immediate word of mouth like a wild fire and Wii U doesn't have that. But it could have that. It needs a little fuel and that fuel is better and widespread advertising.

ok, so now get that info out to the masses. PUT OUT COMMERCIALS, OPRAH, TALK SHOWS, RETAIL WEEKLY ADS, etc. I don't see any of that right now as compared to how much Wii received.

the talk shows, the news casts, and to a certain extent the retail weekly ads were free advertising because the wii was a product people wanted to talk about.  nothing much nintendo can do about that if the masses don't view the wiiU as worth mentioning.

You really think Nintendo has no push in getting it on media like talk shows? All they need to do is send free units to the people in these shows and even do in person visits. Reggie was on a late night show just before launch as an example. They don't show products just because... there is money or free shit exchanging behind the scenes.

Retail ads are part of the ad space for promotions that are agreed too. Sometimes solely from the retailer but much of the time based on manufacturer involvement.

The problem is that the media that kinda made the wii successful is what is undoing the Wii U  Like this piece from last week on ps3 black friday from Reuters:

(Reuters) - Sony Corp sold over 525,000 PlayStation3 consoles in the United States during the week of Black Friday that kicks off the holiday shopping season, surpassing sales of Nintendo's new Wii U.

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc said on Thursday that sales of its six-year-old PlayStation3 jumped 9 percent over the same period last year. The sales compared with over 400,000 units sold of Nintendo's Wii U, the new console on which the Japanese company is staking much of its future.

Microsoft Corp sold over 750,000 units of its Xbox 360 console during the week of Black Friday, one of the heaviest U.S. consumer-spending periods of the year.

The results could deal a blow to Nintendo, which is hoping that the Wii U, which comes with a touchscreen "GamePad" controller, will revive growth and pull it out of the red in coming years. Since its November 18 U.S. launch, the Wii U has been marred by technical glitches, including longsoftware download times.

Analysts have said the initial sales numbers may have been curbed by insufficient supply, common during the launch of new products.

On Monday, Nintendo said Wii U consoles were "effectively sold out" in U.S. retail stores.

Sales of consoles and portable handheld game devices like the Nintendo 3DS are crumbling as gamers migrate to offerings on smartphones and tablets. According to research firm NPD Group, video game hardware sales slid 37 percent in October from a year ago.

The battle between the three game makers is expected to intensify when Sony and Microsoft launch their own next-generation PlayStation and Xbox consoles, expected in 2013.

The media is already defining the Wii U as an unrealable system.  Also Nintendo did no favors by lying sayin the system was "effectively sold out" when that was far from the truth.  If nintendo wants to turn its fortunes around they need to get ahead of news stories like this, and have the word of mouth be positive instead of "my Wii U hard locks on me".

That statement is so full of shit, just so sad :/

y u no believe sweet sweet lize?

Because of this line:

“Nintendo always makes sure it launches games throughout the year. We don’t really focus particularly on Christmas. We’ve got a strong line-up all the way through the year. We always have the marketing to support that.

Nintendo´s problem has always been with followthrough with games past 3-4 year on their consoles since the Nes, it´s their greatest weakness and why they sshould buy/open more studios so they can fully spport their own ecosystem with out 3rd parties.

The problem with Wii U launch is there are just too many ports of games that came out on PS360 already. No coincidence Zombi U is the second best selling title.

Nintendo really needs to come with it in 2013. And I think they need something huge for next Xmas.

There are always a ton of ports for a console launch, it's like an unwritten rule. Devs are on a tight deadline for their games to make the console's launch which is why many of them opt for ports to make a quick buck on the new console and hop on board out the gate. This is also the reason Zombi U turned out mediocre, Ubisoft probably had to rush it out to make launch.

Wii U's library is definitly going to come into its own in the not too distant future. Already there are solid looking titles like Pikmin, Rayman, Wonderful 101, Monster Hunter, Dragon Quest. Plus I'm sure we'll get the inevitable 3D Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Smash Bros, Mario Kart, etc. Also, don't sleep on Lego City Stories, I feel like that has potential to be a huge hit.

B b b u t the Wii U didn't have the best launch lineup ever???

OP. I think the price is a factor... Nintendo owner aren't accustomed to spending a lot on their consoles (over $300)... the PS3 suffered the same at the beginning even having more success in the launching than Wii U.

Seem like PS360 owners (PS3 mainly)  are more accustomed to pay more in their consoles.

Or I'm just spelling crap from my mouth???

Err... that's not true. The PS3 sold less than 100k in Japan first week and less than 150k in the US. It sold extremely well in Europe but only during the first week (no supply constraints in Europe). So yeah, it's crap (joking )

OT: They also promised a rich line-up for early 2013 and said they learned their lesson from the 3DS launch... and now all we'll get is a handful of games in the first quarter. Sales are gonna drop hard in early 2013, unless Wii Fit U becomes another massive hit.

Nintendo does need a big game for the Wii U next Christmas but it CAN NOT be Mario Kart or a Zelda game. They really can't pull that off again.

Well right now i would say that the launch is not bad but also not that great either.
There are only 2 weeks of american sales data and one week of europe sales. We dont have first week sales of japan. So judging a console after two weeks of release is wrong. But to be fair it were you ninty fans which brought up all the nintendodominations and Wii u will destroy the compettion threads months before release.
No wonder that this will bring up all the doom artikles and threads once the first numbers are in.

So lets bring up some facts:

Amerika numbers good so far- good first week and huge drop in second week ( norm ally after black friday week)

EMAA Numbers: Ok numbers but not great numbers. Its only two days of sell Ok but there first week numbers for a new console are always high with all the preorders. The vita managed to sell more on opening week in Uk in a non holiday period than Wii u in a christmas time. Some will say its only because there arent many Wii u shipped.
Well i dont think that thats the reason. It might be a reason but personally i belief its more that people in Emaa are not convinced right now with the Wii U.

Japan: No data right now.

In the end it only depend how well the console will sell trough the whole 2013 and when Microsoft and Sony will anounce and release there next gen consoles.

Wii U had an good launch line up ( or not depends if you have already played most of the games on the ps3 opr not) but what it need now are a consistent amount of good games for the new year. Right know its lacking in that area as i cant see multiplats like Aliens Colonial Marines to be a sellpoint for the Wii U. And i dont really think that games like Pikmin, Rayman legends and Bayonetta 2 will be system sellers anyway.

Right now it looks likes that the Wii will maybe take the same route as the 3ds at the beginning or the vita. Only time will tell if that will become true.

Personally i believe that the Wii U will not repeat a gamecube like scenario but i also dont think it will be as succesfull as the wii. From look of the numbers i think i will be right with my predictions.

Yet so far a lot of the ports (BLOPS II, ME3, Batman: AA) all perform signifcantly worse then the xbox. Not really a strong selling point of a brand new console. Here in the UK the "momentum" for the Wii U seems to be moving at a glacial pace.

Launch time woes.  PS3 has the same problem agains the XBox360 when it launched (and far beyond).  Wii U will come into its own eventually.  Then these types of threads will be fun to look back at.

The PS3 and 360 had these problems.  The Next Box and PS4 will too.  The tables will turn once again.

No one has had launch time woes of performing worse then a 7 year old console....That's  a new one. The PS3 and 360 did not have that problem...

"Nintendo always makes sure it launches games throughout the year" Really, so there was no software draught for the Wii? They kept churning out gaming gems to maintain sales?

Nintendo also said they'd support the Wii to the end, that they would not release an heir to the DS while the DS was still going strong, that they would not be the first to enter the 8th generation and that online gaming and functionality doesn't matter. In short, they say a lot of things that I have a hard time believing.
