If you ask me, Nintendo has been doing a lot of mistakes. First, what a heck do they want to accomplish with the Wii U? Considering that there are already 70M of PS3 and XB360 each out there, I don't see a lot of potential consumers that already don't have at least one of those platforms. Then, considering that the Wii U has technically similar specs as both, I don't see a lot of people buying the Wii U to play most of the 3rd party stuff. Then we are left with the exclusives, basically 3 games of relevance, NSMBU, Nintendo Land and ZumbiU. That is just too little.
Now, assuming we keep getting all the multiplatform titles. Still no reason to buy a Wii U for that if you already own a PS3 or XB360. Then once the PS4/XB720 are released, most enthusiasts will move to the new platforms to get better graphics and multiplatform titles on the Wii U still won't help it.
On the other hand, can you imagine that many 3rd parties creating exclusives for the Wii U? I really don't see that happening, at least not in the US. 3rd parties in the US only care about money, they aren't the creative type, they don't like to take risk, their usual strategy is to keep doing the same, just improving graphics. So why bother about the game pad?
IMHO Nintendo should forget about 3rd parties. Nintendo is doing more damage than good spacing their titles out too much just to make room for 3rd parties titles, and are getting shafted with little to no support, just like the 3DS, which has a terrible holiday lineup this year (and sales that are reflecting that).
Truth is, if Nintendo wants massive 3rd party support, then they need to come with competitive hardware, which they don't do anymore. I am ok with the Wii U as it is, but Nintendo needs to realize that if they want to keep with their "a generation behind" approach, then they must rely on their own games to sell consoles, not 3rd parties. And worse, the Wii U isn't cheap either, so they have a console that has little exclusives (with the next relevant Nintendo title not being released until Q2 2013), is expensive, and has no appreciable improvements over existing consoles in terms of multiplatform games.
They just need to rethink that or they are going to get in big trouble. Time to put their shit together and start releasing more 1st and 2nd party games for both the 3DS and Wii U.
