I went in to Sofmap today in Kyoto to check out the Wii U. This is a very busy Sofmap with a huge video game section and I went around 8pm on launch day. They had set up one aisle of WiiU stuff. They had shrunk the Xbox 360 section and moved some stuff around to make room.
As of 8pm they had 19 Wii U systems left behind the counter in an assortment of various configurations, including the Monster Hunter one.
This is anecdotal evidence from one location, but it seems not great to not have sold out on the first day at such a prime location.
