How can you say they never sold well? We don't have any sales figures for the games.

Also 'hipster minorities'? Where do you come up with this nonsense?

With downloadable games......PR guys announce when they hit 1 million. No announcement, < 1 million. Its also PSN, PS3 gamers are more inclined to buy retail. Its a PS3 gamer culture thing.

Yes, hipster minorities. Those artsy games are meant to be different, not mass market friendly.

So a downloadable game needs to sell 1m+ to have sold well? That's assuming that they would even mention the figures after reaching that target.

Thatgamecompany mentioned how they recieved fanmail from a diverse spectrum of people, including a 9 year old girl to a 65 year old man after the release of Flower. So their games probably appeal to more than just "hipster minorities".

You really make so many disputable statements. You also should try to stop stereotyping so much.

Ok. 500 000+ then. In which case, XBLA would dwarf PSN even greater.

Age gaps and mass appeal arent the same thing.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

What's with the arbitrary sales bar? Indie games are going to be vastly different in terms of expenses and expectations. Just saying 500k is the standard for a downloadable title to be successful is ridiculous. What are you basing that on?

Developer Laughing Jackel released 11 games over PSN, their titles together are approaching 1m downloads on the network, they're annoucning larger projects for PSN and the studio is still running. If 500k was make or break, they'd have gone under.

Yes but wide age gaps and a minority represented by a relatively specific age bracket, together, does not compute. Ergo, their game has reached beyond the target audience that you defined.

This, according to research, facts and figures – none of which was anything to do with us, annoyingly.

2D Boy’s Ron Carmel (they made World Of Goo – one of the best indie games of… well, ever) has taken to the world of blogging to discuss and dissect the world of digital distribution on consoles and elsewhere. The conclusion has been made, at least from a limited sample of independent developers, that PSN is pulling ahead of Xbox Live in the number of games being developed for and released on it. See:

“As you can see, in 2008-2009 Microsoft had more developers making games for XBLA than Sony had for PSN. The gap narrowed in 2010, and this year more of these developers are making PSN games than XBLA games. Next year, the number of games this group makes for XBLA will drop again, and PSN’s lead will widen as the number of developers making PSN games rise to double what it was in 2008-2009.”

Now that's really interesting.  Looks like most of the belief that XLA is way ahead of PSN relative to the indie game development world is based on information that's way out of date.

That goes with a lot of believes about XBL.

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

It's a propaganda piece, anyway, with the author distorting the actual quotes badly.

Much more interesting article that talks about it at The Escapist: "Not all XBLA veterans are so fond. World of Goo developer, Ron Carmel, posted an in-depth breakdown of what he believes are the service's main failings. Brian Provinciano, of Retro City Rampage fame, claimed "a good 85 percent of developers" have had unpleasant experiences with the service, and accused Microsoft of "nickel and diming" developers. Braid developer, Jon Blow, has misgivings as well, as he detailed in an interview with Gamasutra:

"But if you make an XBLA game, the amount of bullshit that adds is gigantic. It can take a third to a half of the effort required to build your game, in some cases, and I don't think that they understand that. I don't think that they understand that, at least for that size of game, they're competing very heavily with Steam and iOS for developer mindshare."   http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/120910-Castle-Crashers-Dev-XBLA-Critical-to-Indie-Community
