long legs means low revenue most of the time because sony sells their games most of the time for very cheap only half an year after release or even earlier (with 19.99 official price, there is not much left) so a big bang at release should be much favourable to make money. that doesn't really count for nintendo with awesome legs and with high prices even after years for some games.

with that said, i don't think psabr will be a major "flop" like some other games for any console but after all that hype in any forums it still shows that internet world is really different to the whole gaming world. if you would only count the internet hype it should have had one of the biggest launch ever but nobody should have expected this and i think nobody did.

Sony did the same as Nintendo

i remember it feeling like it took soooooo long for games like Heavenly Sword and Folklore to hit $19.99. GOW3 hit $39.99 like only 8 months after being released. idk what the rule is when it comes to dropping prices on games in this industry

I remember i complained about it at Gamestop lol with Folklore and Mario Galaxy lol "yo these games came out like 2-3 years ago and they still have not hit $20 yet?"

don't know about these games, i just know that the uncharted games, gran turismo and some other were super cheap after very short time and those are even games which sold good without reduction so i don't really think it's a good way just to sell more units (ok they hope to sell more of the future releases then but i don't think that really works so much if people buy the games who weren't interested so much in them)

and there is one to consider, with only one third of the price, the costs of shipping and the disc and the package stay the same so the revenue the developer get's is much lower as one third with one third of the price at retail.

but to know what will happen with psabr we have to wait half an year or so.

Many of these million+ sellers are still considered financial failures due to how much they cost to produce

Hence why you wont be seeing sequels to the following anytime soon:

  • Heavenly Sword
  • Valkyria Chronicles (sequel went to cheaper to develop PSP)
  • Mirror's Edge
  • Dante's Inferno (doesn't really need sequel)
  • Bayonetta (sequel wouldn't get green lit by Sega, Nintendo nabbed it)

So while PS All-Stars Battle Royale will enjoy healthy sales for long time, it is still pretty shocking to me that a game that gives both PS3 and PSV version with single purchase didn't rally the PS3 fanbase behind it.

It just shows the Sony fans are not as dedicated to supporting new IP games on Sony platforms as the Nintendo fans are on Nintendo platforms where new experimental games like Smash Bros, Animal Crossing, Brain Age, Professor Layton, etc start out and end up as 5+ million sellers... even 10+ million sellers.

Do the same thing you did for Sony new IPs for Nintendo new IPs and you will see the Nintendo fans just support their platform heck of a lot better.

@Bold

so Sony fans didn't buy any of their new IPS from Sony?

you have GOT to be kidding me -_-

Playstation all stars despite being fairly mediocre (my opinion) seems to still have hope.

"super cheap"?? The Uncharted games didnt get that cheap that quick though. it also took Uncharted Drakes Fortune a while to reach $19.99 aswell. i cant remember uncharted 2 though

dont all companies cut their prices the same though? some get cut early while others get cut later on?

I don't believe that you're correct.  Sony first party releases usually stay at full price for a long time, much longer than what you see with third party releases.  I was able to sell Killzone 3 and Gran Turismo 5 for $40 each back to Amazon several months after I bought each of them because retail was still at $60.  The price drops are usually gradual, as well, falling to $39 and $29 before hitting $19 much later on the re-release.

With Valkyria Chronicles and Bayonetta, I think the important part is that they are Sega titles, which is just a disaster.  Bayonetta 2 would almost certainly have been published by anyone with a firm financial standing.  Valkyria Chronicles was hurt by releasing at a point when no one had a PS3, in my opinion.

As for Sony consumers not automatically buying games just because Sony releases them, I have no problem with that.  In fact, I think that's the way it should be.  People should buy games they want to play, not just for console loyalty.

What we're looking at with Sony first party games is different than what we see with Microsoft or Nintendo, regardless.  Sony has a global installed base with extremely varied demographics and tastes.  The only genres that we can really say are huge on the PS3 are driving simulation and soccer.  Worldwide Studios produces an extremely varied portfolio.  On the other hand, Microsoft and Nintendo have a much tighter focus on the games they develop.  Quite a few games that performed well on the PS3 probably wouldn't have been supported on the Wii even if they were developed by Nintendo.

ok seems like i was wrong, they only cut ucharted 3 so fast to 19.99, not drakes fortune and 2 which has still a higher price officially if i understand it correct (no clue why they did it with 3 then) and i don't know but i don't believe nintendo would have sold gt for 19.99 only so short after release because it's not as if it was a sales flop^^

but still, if a game doesn't sell much before a price drop but good in the long run it still could mean a loss. not talking about ps3 games here, just in general so i think it is important to sell good from beginning if the games have been very expensive to produce which is hard to say from game to game.

@everyone who wants to punch me now, maybe i failed and it is more like one year for some games and not as much as i thought lol^^ my sense of time/price seems to work perfectly.

Nintendo fans pretty much have no choice. If you're on a Nintendo console, you have to buy Nintendo games because that's virtually all there is. I'd say Nintendo fans are just buying what they can rather than showing dedication.

As for Battle Royale, I wouldn't be surprised if digital sales are considerably high, considering its $15 cheaper on PSN. It could have launched at well over 200k. I think its going to make a profit. It doesn't appear to have had a large budget.
