Forums - Sales - GTA series shipment numbers hit 125 million

I'm very sure they count Episodes from Liberty City towards GTA IV sales.

They did the same with Red Dead Redemption and Undead Nightmare.

those probably inculde the iOS and andriod versions of GTA3 and GTA vice city, because the franchise sold 11 million more units in about year with no releases other than the phone versions

No these are shipped numbers.  You can't ship digital content.

You can count digital sales towards shipments though. If digital sales were excluded from the 125m figure, then Zelnick would have mentioned them separately to make his company's numbers look even more impressive. The fact that he didn't suggests that digital sales are already included in the 125m figure. This also makes sense in light of the iOS releases and 11m additional sales for the franchise since last year.

That makes sense and i could see that.  Did not know they counted digital towards shipped.  Thanks.

They might account for the difference, but it still stands that digital numbers are harder to track and less accurate than software shipped copies by companies.

On a side note, digital sales in US are close to retail sales according to E3 data. VGC clearly is becoming a less accurate picture of the entire video game sales data.

oh that is a lot, so how much did every game sell for on average? i want to see the full revenue number

Why do you say that?  Wouldn't it be just as easy for the company themselves?  They should have all that information logged.  Now for a site like vghartz yeah I'd agree

Impressive but digital is making VGC go crazy.

Because as this thread points out there are many sources for digital content and companies do not have to report numbers to anyone. Beyond that because I have read it many times. This number in the article is a calculated assumption not a fact just like vgc's numbers.

And I helped! I just bought GTA4 the other night on steam. I'm actually really impressed by how high I was able to put my display settings. The game still looks really good after being out for a few years :)

Take Two knows exactly how many boxed copies they have shipped and how many digital copies they have sold.

Well, forgive me for not reading the article. That stated, the topic for me has shifted to digital sales in general.

good stuff,great series for me

so are people saying there 16/17m PC/phone/digital sales not accounted for here

On that topic, the vast majority of digital sales (based on NPD data, not E3 data) can be attributed to the PC (most notably Steam), iOS and Android. On consoles and handhelds, the market is still very much lopsided in favor of boxed copies. And consoles and handhelds are what VGC tracks, so this website's relevance isn't in any danger of becoming meaningless.

I never said the site was meaningless. And I am aware of many sources of digital sales Nintendo, Live and PS online aming them as well. It is important to know the site is not calculating a large portion of the market, that is all.
