Forums - Nintendo - Why Doesn't Nintendo Just Make Games Like Zombi U On Their Own?

I vote for an action/RPG featuring non specific action figure!

I asked this same question back in the day.

The general consensus was that Nintendo would pale in comparison to Sony. Suffice to say, I couldn't disagree with that.

It never made sense to me that Nintendo was able to give up on a significant portion of the gaming market without a fight. It felt kind of arrogant, to be honest, like they thought more mature titles were a fad that would quickly fade away. Except they're not.

They're successful at what they do, though, so I guess they don't have to diversify. Still, it's kind of a shame. Perhaps they have different plans with the Wii U.

I think that they do have to diversify if they want game consumers to genuinely believe that they can cator to all types of gamers...

Games like ZombiU and Bayonetta 2 will definitely help, but Nintendo is going to have to think longrun; two games will not be enough to persuade many...

They need a franchise that is as big as Halo, Assassin's Creed, Uncharted, Resident Evil, etc. ... in that tier of appeal but of equal/better quality.

And I don't think this is really so difficult for them. They have the talent to do it. Seemingly not the desire though.

I think they have this irrational fear that if they start making games like this, they could be successful at it, and then it would compromise their carefully cultivated image as the Walt Disney of gaming.

So they basically just take the naive approach in thinking third parties will take care of it for them.

These are not Nintendo brands, that's why.

And why can't Nintendo make games like that?

Why entrust a huge part of the demographic you're hoping to get with a system (14-35 year old males that predominantly play on the PS3/360) to some random studio at Ubi Soft and Tecmo when you have internal teams that are just simply far more talented?

If it's so important to the platform to have this kind of content, then for gawd's sake Nintendo, stop relying on the same failed formula of hoping that third parties this time will give two craps about your platform.

They will give two craps about your platform when you make your own Halo/Assassin's Creed/Uncharted that sells 4-6 million copies worldwide, *then* developers will look at the system and say "hey there's a big market for a high quality matoooor game on Wii U".

It doesn't even have to be like 4-5 franchises, just make one, extremely high quality new IP tailored towards this market segment. Let it set the bar for other developers.

That doesn't have to happen. GT5 have sold 8+M and third parties haven't made any racing sims for the PS3.

I totaly agree with you. Nintendo should stop rehashing their franchises and try seriously some new IPs. I'm not talking about the Mii crap or more kid stuffs. Why can't they make a great shooter or hack and slash game? I feel like Nintendo is sticking into their comfort zone way to much. That comfort zone did wonders for them this gen, but I feel it will get repetitive and tiresome next gen. NSMBWii sold 25million on the Wii, so their answer for next gen is launch with NSMBU, release a NSMB2 on 3ds barely 4months before that, launch Paper Mario a week before NSMBU and all this 1 year after they launched SM3DL and MK7 a couple of weeks apart. I get that Mario brought $$$$$$ on the Wii and 3DS but this is rediculous. Slow down with Mario, Zelda and Kirby and give us Metroid and new IPs.

Kid Icarus was a great start, but it had this ''Nintendo feeling'' to it. That feeling is great cause it's usualy associated with quality but I wish we could see more games w/o that Nintendo feeling. We need more games like Xenoblade and Metroid Prime that doesnt have that ''nintendo fun cute quality game'' and instead have more ''core serious quality game''. I'm a core gamer, and I play games and I don't care if they have blood or if they are ''kiddie''. Mario Galaxy2 and SS are 2 of my favorite games of all time but I wish more games from Nintendo gave me the feeling of it being a serious core experience like Xenoblade. Games that does'nt require ppl to have a heart of a child to enjoy them.

Seriously, when me and my friend saw that Nintendo Direct right before e3 with the action figure and the guy playing Zombi U. My friend seemed curious about that obscure zombi game. I told him it was fake and that it was just to show a example of what you can do on the the console. He asked me why I thought that. I answered because their is no way Nintendo is making a Zombie game and that their is no way they are using a 3rd party game on their pre-e3 Nintendo Direct to unveil the console's features. Turns out I was wrong about them not using a 3rd party game to unveil hardware features, but I was right to be convinced they would never do such a game, and that is sad imo. It's sad that a company is stucked so much into a kind of games that we can tell what games that company could or could never do. It's sad that they are limiting themselves that way. A example of that is Square Enix back in the days it seemed that all RPGs in the industry came from them, it also felt like RPGs was all they could do. But today they are making Hitman and Tomb Raider, they left their niche and now unlike 10years ago the idea of them making a hack and slash or a zombie game is not out of the question unlike nintendo.

Conclusion of this wall of text: Nintendo should stop limiting themselves, they should leave their niche and start taking risks. That way they could surprise everyone by making wonders on kind of games that are totaly unexpected from them.

Well, haven't Retro been hiring developers in the past year or two that have worked on exactly the kind of 'hardcore' PS360 games described in the OP? I'm pretty sure whatever Retro's working on right now will be quite epic and 'hardcore', and I'm betting we'll find out a lot more @ E3 2013.

I would much rather they try to get Bethesda and other western developers on board with Nintendo consoles like they have been more and more successful with the Japanese developers. Why should Nintendo staff have to make some M rated game if that style of game doesnt appeal to them. On other hand if there is an internal team at Nintendo that wants to explore something M themed and Nintendo executives shut that down that would make me unhappy.

I think I can explain though asking a question ...

How many high quality games released by third party publishers are similar to a 3D Mario platformer, 2D Mario platformer, Mario Kart, The Legend of Zelda, Pikmin, Super Smash Bros, Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Art Academy, Pokemon, Animal Crossing, or (almost) every Nintendo game?

Nintendo's success comes from creating high quality games in new genres they created or genres that the rest of the industry has abandoned, and the result of this is that a large portion of gamers can only really have their needs met by Nintendo. Making games in genres that third party publishers are already focused on is not a winning strategy for Nintendo and I would recommend that Nintendo focus on completely different genres.
