For one Mario series of games I named are all in a continuous series where none of them are treated as spin offs, according to Wiki. Those are the mainline series and they put the true spinoffs like Mario Kart seperate. For example, Mario Kart 7 is on the 3DS and 8 will probably be on WiiU, the console doesn't depict their position in the series. Not to mention they are all based on the same rudimentary platforming mechanics.Same goes for Pokemon. I do not count them as groups because they actaully expect people to buy each iteration, and they do. Just because all the imagine games come out at the same time really doesn't make them less of a series. Regardless, the number is astronomical in comparison to most other series.
Main point being, he was right to call it mediocre because so many games in the same line with similar playstyles makes them nothing new.

Wikipedia isn't the be all, end all. The gameplay is what forms the mainline and it's pretty obvious that the games I am calling spinoffs do not have the same gameplay as Super Mario Bros. which is the first game in the series.
Nintendo expects people to exchange Pokémon and that's what every normal gamer does. Only the Pokémaniacs buy both versions. Everyone else buys one version, because the games are the same aside from a few exclusive Pokémon.
It would really help if you knew what you are talking about or at the very least made an effort to fill holes in your knowledge on the subject matter. It would also be appreciated if you realized that you are essentially defending a blatant troll. There's actually no such thing as winning for you in this argument. You can either concede that you are wrong or you can continue to debate and lose respect, because the word "mediocre" means "ordinary" in the context of "average or lacking in quality", not in the context of "usual, commonly encountered".

Even Dynasty Warriors mixes up the formula every now and then. Sunshine and Galaxy are mainline entries, and although vary slightly from the 2d platforming versions still maintain many of the same staples and mechanics but in a 3D world(like how Crash Bandicoot is still a Vertical Mario at heart). Pokemon, I remember distincly reading an article about how 70% of Pokemon buyers overlap and buy multiple versions of the same series, IE Red,Blue,Yellow.
I don't see how an admitted troll can say they are losing respect for me for arguing reality. I also don't see how you can say such things and not get banned when if a person breathes a slight ill word of 3DS or WiiU or sneezes in a Nintendo thread they get banned.
You can try and alter or manipulate the meaning of the word but it still fits the situation.
