At some point, people are going to get tired of buying the same Nintento games on a Nintendo console and then Nintendo is going to have a serious problem.

This is the best post made in a while.

You're missing the point.   The numbers point to two massive companies worth of sales potential that would easily suck up the third.  Without having the cost of developing an expensive hardware platform or having to constantly reinvent, Nintendo would do more than print their own money being 3rd party on PS(whatever) or xbox(whatever)...the Nintendo people would all shift to a platform and all the existing MS or Sony people would start blasting money into Nintento IP.  The money is not in hardware, it's in the games and hardware addons.

They could even demand from MS or Sony direct hardware support so that they could keep upgrading their interface to what they want/demand.  You would buy your Playstation with a Nintendo controller instead of the stock PS one you don't like.

It's all theoretical but honestly, with all their games, they'd probably invent a whole new form of currency...just to be able to quantify how much they were really making.

That's not a point, it's a supposition that's based on an overly simplistic model.

For starters, prior to the Wii U Nintendo generally made a profit on its hardware; it's Sony and Microsoft who espouse(d) the idea that hardware must be sold at a loss. More importantly, as a platform owner Nintendo reaps a sum for each third-party unit sold on its platform. Shoot, it reaps a profit for every unit created for its system. You're essentially calling upon Nintendo, the longest-lasting hardware maker still in the market, to surrender a lucrative profit model and pay a royalty fee to Sony/Microsoft/whoever for every game they make, all to avoid an expense which they've repeatedly proven they can absorb.

Second, if it was easy for Microsoft or (*snicker*) Sony to absorb Nintendo, it would have been done a long time ago. In fact, Nintendo would be extremely difficult, if not outright impossible, for any company to "suck up." They're sitting on a war chest of billions, billions which they've amassed in part because they are more than a mere third-party.

Also, Sony is currently selling bonds to stay afloat. Not stocks. Bonds. They're in no position to do anything to Nintendo.

Third, if this was your original thesis, then the post you made earlier is a terrible, terrible way to express it.

i think what helps Nintendo make unique and long lasting games is their closeness to their hardware and thought process when making hardware. I dont think they would be as great as a 3rd party game publisher. Plus they have always made a profit from their released consoles (i think, maybe the early 3d sytem they had lost money) so i dont see why they should leave the hardware market either.

You telling me that they wouldn't have DESTROYED the sales of a whole ton of companies products that walk into their markets with dramatically lesser games but on ps or xbox this last gen?  They would annihilate like 100 games with their current IP without having to spend a dime on R&D for hardware unless they wanted to own the controller/addon market which they would have done too.

The simplest solution for having all the best games on one single platform is this: Third parties should make proper games for the Nintendo system.

Rol as always with few words clears the picture... Rol you are like a sniper one shot one kill

It's actually kinda funny to read when Nintendo made the most money on the gaming front making their own hardware vs MS/SONY lol. If anybody should exit the hardware making ATM, it should be Sony, not Nintendo, based on the simple business decision that they can bring their IPs to other platforms as well after going in the red so damn much. It'd be more interesting to see MS vs Nintendo right now. Sony is not even really relevant in that equation even though they have some really good games.

I agree that Sony needs to get themselves out of a lot of Hardware markets (HDTV, eReader, Camera, Speakers, Receivers, etc), but they need to stick with the Playstation line in both Hardware and Software.

Nintendo is doing fine, but last couple of years have been brutal to them with declining sales and strong Yen. They need the Wii U to be a big success which I think the machine will be because it is packed full of value and has really engaging fun software.

MS is the only vendor in the market that doesn't bring any hardware value. They do bring services innovation and value with XBL and some other innovations long replicated by the others. If they don't produce unique software for their consoles and rely completely on being console of choice for majority sales of 3rd party ports, than eventually they will lose the multi-platform gamers like me who just don't use their machine that much.

Hard drives in consoles, ethernet cards in consoles, mics for online, kinect, and easy to program architecture. Yea no value to any of those items.

Even if Nintendo wanted to get out of making hardware themselves, why forfeit all their hardware rights and claim to third party licensing fees.

If I were Nintendo I'd go to Google, Sony, Microsoft, Disney (yup, you heard that right), and Apple and have them sit down and say straight up, we'll make consoles/phones/tablets in conjunction with *one* of you exclusively, but this is the deal:

- We get control/design input on all co-branded gaming platforms.
- We receive a hardware royalty per hardware sale (so to integrate a "Nintendo" platform into say your cell phone or tablet, you have to pay Nintendo $40-$50 a unit as a hardware licensing fee)
- We receive at least 50% of all third party royalty revenue from any Nintendo co-branded devices.
- Nintendo's retains all profit to their own games.
- Company partnering with Nintendo is forbidden from attempting any type of take over of Nintendo or purchase of Nintendo stock.

Watch these mega-corps get into a bidding war for Nintendo, they could easily score themselves a deal where they maintain a large degree of control over hardware designs and profit and still get a fat cut of third party licensing fees.

This is actually quite good points, and I agree that Nintendo should do this next gen - with their handhelds. But that all depends on how well 3DS will end up being. RIght now it's doing pretty damn good. And if Nintendo can sell 100m hand helds they're safe and don't need other companies to make their hardware.

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

Whats funny is that at this point its more probable that Sony goes third party than Nintendo.

Not really. Sony's only purpose in videogames requires it to be a first-party. If it was just another third-party, it'd be better served by abandoning the market altogether.
