Forums - Gaming - Nintendo should exit console making and create a channel instead!

It's not about right now as the WiiU is released and hope will be successful... it's about long term and I'm not asking Nintendo to do games for other consoles, but more of asking them to make a channel where you could buy their games through any devices. It's not like they would have to code for said console then sell games for it then code for another console and so on... unifying the gaming market would be very profitable for everyone as console makers wouldn't need to sell their hardware at a loss... people would care about games more than consoles and a company would be glad their games would touch gamers instead of console followers.

You're missing the point.   The numbers point to two massive companies worth of sales potential that would easily suck up the third.  Without having the cost of developing an expensive hardware platform or having to constantly reinvent, Nintendo would do more than print their own money being 3rd party on PS(whatever) or xbox(whatever)...the Nintendo people would all shift to a platform and all the existing MS or Sony people would start blasting money into Nintento IP.  The money is not in hardware, it's in the games and hardware addons.

They could even demand from MS or Sony direct hardware support so that they could keep upgrading their interface to what they want/demand.  You would buy your Playstation with a Nintendo controller instead of the stock PS one you don't like.

It's all theoretical but honestly, with all their games, they'd probably invent a whole new form of currency...just to be able to quantify how much they were really making.

So MS and Sony shouldn't do this because they make slightly less powerful PC's in console clothing (this is apparently pushing innovation) but Ninty should because they don't innovate.

I think you are confused and I'm speaking as a 360 and PS3 guy before Wii.

I think Sony should do this because they are skint and they are morphing into a software company anyway (games, Music, Movies). May as well just get on with it.

Oh... I'm sorry. This IS a comedy thread... isnt it?

On the one hand I like the idea of not having to buy 3 consoles and instead can buy only 2. On the other hand, SONY still makes the best hardware.

Even if Nintendo wanted to get out of making hardware themselves, why forfeit all their hardware rights and claim to third party licensing fees.

If I were Nintendo I'd go to Google, Sony, Microsoft, Disney (yup, you heard that right), and Apple and have them sit down and say straight up, we'll make consoles/phones/tablets in conjunction with *one* of you exclusively, but this is the deal:

- We get control/design input on all co-branded gaming platforms.
- We receive a hardware royalty per hardware sale (so to integrate a "Nintendo" platform into say your cell phone or tablet, you have to pay Nintendo $40-$50 a unit as a hardware licensing fee)
- We receive at least 50% of all third party royalty revenue from any Nintendo co-branded devices.
- Nintendo's retains all profit to their own games.
- Company partnering with Nintendo is forbidden from attempting any type of take over of Nintendo or purchase of Nintendo stock.

Watch these mega-corps get into a bidding war for Nintendo, they could easily score themselves a deal where they maintain a large degree of control over hardware designs and profit and still get a fat cut of third party licensing fees.

I love what Nintendo is doing, and I don't want them to stop.

It's not a good idea, to start a channel and leave their business behind.

They maybe could do both?

Not Nintendo, I would not want to see Microsoft in console race. I love Nintendo's games and hardware as well as Sony's. Microsoft is a disaster in hardware department. They should go channel router etc etc.

LOL how would you say they're a disaster in the hardware department?  Unlike their competitiors, they have exactly 2(two) generations under their belts.  They've rolled that into massive success.  With XBL, makes more money than the other two...no matter how successful people think WII is, MS still whacks off what, 600 million or more just in XBL Gold memberships a year.  Plus all the addon points, they KILL Nintendo and Sony in how much they make.

Look I love my WII and PS3 but once I buy my game I like for them or upgrade an existing game, my cash going to Nintendo or Sony ENDS.  Ms pulls about a buck fifty out of me every single year and you know what?  Happily.  They do a great job on XBL other than major release times when servers still crap from time to time.

Add to that Netflix and my 360 frigging rocks for such a crappy piece of hardware. ;)

I was talking about their fragile hardware.

i think what helps Nintendo make unique and long lasting games is their closeness to their hardware and thought process when making hardware. I dont think they would be as great as a 3rd party game publisher. Plus they have always made a profit from their released consoles (i think, maybe the early 3d sytem they had lost money) so i dont see why they should leave the hardware market either.
