Forums - Sony - Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition headhunted by Sony

VG247

Sony made a bid to secure a PlayStation Network release for Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition, Beamdog boss Trent Oster revealed.

“We were approached by Sony to bring the game to PSN,” Oster told Shack News .

“So I counter-proposed what I thought it would cost for us to do it right. For me, to make Baldur’s Gate Enhanced Edition a good experience on a console would require a very heavy redesign for the entire control and input scheme.”

Oster said he just wants the game to be great on all formats, and a great console conversion would require “a large scale effort”.

“Sony decided not to proceed. I believe they wanted to proceed with a quality product, but we just couldn’t make the numbers work,” he said.

Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition arrives on iPad, Mac and PC on November 28 having been delayed from an expected September launch. It’s an overhauled HD re-release of a classic BioWare title.

hm a shame :/

I can't even imagine it on a console, not the way I played it. I assume the money it would take was probably cost prohibitive to Sony and their sales expectations.

It would be ridiculously difficult to play without a mouse or touch device. They could have put it forward for Vita then gone from their depending on success.

Could have been done. The beauty of the pause makes it possible on any platform, any control scheme.

Shame that Sony backed down

It would be a lot more frustrating using a control pad though. Now WiiU or Vita... that I could see.

WiiU and Vita would be a perfect fit.

So would Wii or Move to be fair.

Yeah, they could launch it with a keyboard and mouse in mind but that won't reach a bunch of people and I'd imagine people buying it without knowing you can't use the DualShock.

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

It would have been interesting on a console, but I think PC is the only true way to play this one anyways. It was one of the kings of the old school PC RPG universe, so it seems only fitting to experience it that way.

I'd agree with the assessments on the DualShock though, that wouldn't have made it easy to play. Same sort of reason why RTSes never seem to really work that great on consoles. The mouse, simple as it is, is a fine instrument.

If Bioware thinks the game is worth porting to console, then it is their perogative to make that investment and publish to consoles.

Why should Sony pay them to port the game over? At least Sony approached them and asked if the PC/Mac headed Baldur's Gate could also be ported to Sony's consoles.

PS - The Sony PS3 supports Keyboard/Mouse... and maybe they should be okay to have a game that only works Keyboard/Mouse.
