If percentage points among a handful of reviewers is a criteria that's important to you, then congratulations. Personally, I don't need that kind of validation. There are games in the 80s that I like above games in the 90s and that's just fine with me. For me, reviews are just guides to give me a general idea about a game, with the actual score being even less important than that.

Mario games are a good example, actually. Mario Galaxy might have the highest score ever but I still won't go out of my way to play it. I just didn't care greatly for any of the Mario games I've owned in the past and would take Zelda over all of them any day of the millennium. A few points difference in subjective scores assigned by reviewers I don't know really isn't all that meaningful to me.

I thought that Galaxy was the worst 3D Mario, but then again my taste is somewhat weird for Nintendo games as my least favourite Zelda game is Ocarina of Time and my favourite 3D games for both series are Sunshine and Wind Waker. Probably because I grew up with the GC.

Yeah, that plays a huge part in our "best" standards.

Metacritic is not about comparing old games with new ones, imo. It is to show how a particular game was received in that particular time. Or else Zelda 1 would have to be considered a shitty game when compared to a game like Wind Waker - and all those great scores it received in 1986 would have to be dismissed.

My best (ocarina) is what shocked me more in "greatness" at the time. But a game like Wind Waker is much superior to it in many ways, for example.

I respectfully disagree. While Mario 64 was a great first step into the 3D relm by the beloved mascot, I think Galaxy polished the formula to near perfection.

Sunshine gave us a glimpse of that greatness in the secret levels. But Galaxy delivered that kind of level design greatness and superbly tight controls throughout the entire game.

Mario Galaxy is the first time since Mario 3 where a Mario game has been my favourite game overall, but Mario Galaxy 2 is better - in my opinion.

Mario 64 was overrated. Maybe the most overrated Mario game.
