Didn't like it much. Should show that it is a new console for the average consumer to understand. There was no "hardcore" games like they said either. New ones are bound to come though.

I think if we have this discussion a year from now you and others will be loving the Wii U ads - let's hope I'm right. Nintendo has always maintained that they build toys, which is one big reason why they almost refuse to make a console that parents woud think is not appropriate or too expensive for their children. It is also reflected in their games, which can be seen as toys. It's only recently that its fans that were once little kids and are now adults, are demanding that Nintendo be more adult and hardcore - but that is not Nintendo. Plus, I think targeting children has always been a good marketing strategy on a wide rang of products, including consoles. I think they are excited about 3DS and Wii U, as they have now regained their 'dominance' in the hanheld and more so the console markets. They might by less excited about the 3DS, but I think they are keen to keep ahead of PS and MS expecially considering that those other console maufacturers are suppose to have the 'better' consoles. |
We're all (well most of us) aware that Nintendo was a toy maker in the past, but it's not the 1970s anymore.
I'm trying not be overly critical, I mean it's not that bad of an ad, but I just think the product deserves a better commercial than this.
The Wii U isn't a toy. It's actually a fairly sophisticated set-top-box with Nintendo TVii being a central hub for the living room (at least in theory), Miiverse, video chat, video services, web browsing, social media integration, Youtube, and half the system RAM devoted to non-gaming functionality, and high definition gaming ... I mean I think the product should be positioned in a more elegant light than "oh it's a new Nintendo for 8-year-old Johnny and his 14 sister can karaoke on it too" which was a good 75% of the ad.
If I'm an adult who isn't incredible pre-disposed to Nintendo, this ad didn't do much, and kids want what older teenagers want anyway, so marketing to an older crowd doesn't alienate kids at all (quite the opposite actually).
There is probably a good product here, but Nintendo is doing it a disservice with the two E3 showings they gave it and both the US and UK launch ads. The September conference, at least they got that right. Lets hope the Wii U Nintendo Direct for this month delivers the goods.
Apparently you can scratch records with the Wii U.

Gee, I gotta say, the UK is better than the US, only because they actually said it was a new machine...
It was good, I'll give them that, but not by much...

I think its a good ad. Seems like they're trying to hard to differentiate it from the original Wii though. I can see a repeat of what happened with the 3DS early on.
Look how awful wii sales are lol...
Nintendo cant get wiiu out fast enough.

What are they doing? The line-up is tailor made for core gamers and they only address casual gamers in the campaign, even though they have readied discounted Wii packs for them. This is schizophrenia at best. Not everyone follows gaming news on websites, how do they think core gamers will react at this kind of message?

It's all about the games when a new system comes out. The simplest way to get someone who doesn't follow gaming news interested in buying a console is to show off cool games. The more games, the better. This will make these people go out of their way and look up the product on the internet or talk with their friends about it. What you propose is what the first 3DS commercials were about. Nintendo emphasized the stereoscopic 3D without glasses and showed people going "ah" and "oh" while looking at a 3DS. They didn't show any games at all. The 3DS launch period was anything but good. People don't buy video game systems for the hardware, they buy them for the games. |
yup ^.^
IF 3rd party continues to support Wii-U, the Wii-U will have everything we have asked for in terms of software. It definitely has an exciting start.
Is it just me or the Wii-U feels like a PS2 so far?
An OK ad for an already sold out console!
