I think if we have this discussion a year from now you and others will be loving the Wii U ads - let's hope I'm right. Nintendo has always maintained that they build toys, which is one big reason why they almost refuse to make a console that parents woud think is not appropriate or too expensive for their children. It is also reflected in their games, which can be seen as toys. It's only recently that its fans that were once little kids and are now adults, are demanding that Nintendo be more adult and hardcore - but that is not Nintendo. Plus, I think targeting children has always been a good marketing strategy on a wide rang of products, including consoles. I think they are excited about 3DS and Wii U, as they have now regained their 'dominance' in the hanheld and more so the console markets. They might by less excited about the 3DS, but I think they are keen to keep ahead of PS and MS expecially considering that those other console maufacturers are suppose to have the 'better' consoles. |
We're all (well most of us) aware that Nintendo was a toy maker in the past, but it's not the 1970s anymore.
I'm trying not be overly critical, I mean it's not that bad of an ad, but I just think the product deserves a better commercial than this.
The Wii U isn't a toy. It's actually a fairly sophisticated set-top-box with Nintendo TVii being a central hub for the living room (at least in theory), Miiverse, video chat, video services, web browsing, social media integration, Youtube, and half the system RAM devoted to non-gaming functionality, and high definition gaming ... I mean I think the product should be positioned in a more elegant light than "oh it's a new Nintendo for 8-year-old Johnny and his 14 sister can karaoke on it too" which was a good 75% of the ad.
If I'm an adult who isn't incredible pre-disposed to Nintendo, this ad didn't do much, and kids want what older teenagers want anyway, so marketing to an older crowd doesn't alienate kids at all (quite the opposite actually).
There is probably a good product here, but Nintendo is doing it a disservice with the two E3 showings they gave it and both the US and UK launch ads. The September conference, at least they got that right. Lets hope the Wii U Nintendo Direct for this month delivers the goods.

Brilliant!
