Forums - Microsoft - Best looking Xbox 360 game?

selnor said:
To be honest theres not alot of difference in the best the PS3 has and the best the 360 has done so far.

1 thing though is it is a shame Microsoft didnt have their first party teams push the 360 like the first party pushed the ps3.

Te first real games to push the 360 were using 3rd party engines. Crysis 1, Crysis 2 and Gears Of War 3 for example. Alan Wake also had some great visual moments especially with the lighting and the weather effects.

So far I have to say Forza Horizon is not only the best visuals on 360 but the best visuals in its racing field bar none on any console.

Also from what Ive seen of the first 20 mins of Halo 4 that looks like it will be the 360's best visuals by some way. Possibly best on console. But I dont want to turn this into that thread here on VGC. It only ends with an invasion of the Microsoft forums.

Was that game really pushing the visuals? By the time it was released on the 360 it was 2 years old and didn't really have the same standard as the PC version. From the shots I saw of it Crysis 2 beat it hands down. Also played the demo of Forza Horizon and the graphics looked good but not exceptionally. Were they toned done to reduce the download, because they didn't look that special to me?

OT: Halo 4

Around the Network

Currently: Halo Reach, Forza 4, Forza Horizon, Red Dead Redemption, Gears of War 3 and some others.

Halo 4 should be up there soon.

Forza Horizon is easilly the best looking game of any Console.

Anyone who red the Digital Foundry veridict knows they have done things that no other dev did this Gen.

But i guess Halo 4 is going to change that soon and with open sandbox not Corridor Shooter like most of the Competition.

Nobody has said it yet, but I thought Halo: Reach has some pretty great details - and used it graphics well. You could see aliens flying in the distance - but if you get to close they will attack you. Plus the lighting from you energy pulses in the weapons and such. It was great. (Halo Anniversary uses the same engine.)

Course I think Halo 4 will be even better. But at the time, way back two whole years ago, it was quite good.

Bungie has never pushed Halo to its limit in either graphics or story.

Halo 2 came pretty close to the limits of the original Xbox.

Halo 2 was great but PGR and Forza were the graphics bar on the Xbox. Ninja Gaiden Black was one of the best id ever seen on my original Xbox before I sold it.

PGR and Forza didn't have as much going on as Halo 2 though. Halo 2 managed to do some really good lighting and shaders while having lots of AI characters in play at once in large environments. PGR and Forza, by virtue of being racing games, were more restricted in scope. Halo 2 really couldn't have looked much better for the platform it was on.

Gears of war 3

forza horizon and gears 3.

and for it's time pgr 4 looks brilliant. couldn't believe my eyes when i bought the game and walked around the cars at my houses in pgr4.

Naughty Dog needed the truckloads of cash from Sony to create Uncharted 2 and 3 and the upcoming Last of Us. Without the money for R&D, Naughty Dog would have done what most developers do, use Unreal Engine. Nuaghty Dog is talented, no doubt about it, but other developers have tons of talent too. The difference is Sony needed Naughty Dog to hit a home run with Uncharted 2. Sony needed Uncharted 2 to look better than everything else at the time. Sony was willing to pay what ever it takes to get that. Naughty Dog pulled it off thanks to that money. Most publishers are willing to have good enough graphics instead of paying for outstanding graphics.

I don't think the Uncharted games had that big of a budget (or The Last Of Us, for that matter). The Killzone games had higher budgets than the Uncharted games, and the latter are considered better looking titles. I'd argue that mainly Naughty Dog's talent has allowed for the results.

The PS3 is a percent, or so, more powerful than the 360 (in peak performance and number crunching), but that has hardly impacted the final products. Sony's teams were just better equipped with in-house resources (going back to Naughty Dog + Santa Monica's tech wizardry), which is why their exclusives stayed ahead.

Halo 4 is built with in-house resources (pulling away from the redundance of the Unreal Engine 3.0, many 360 exclusives are known to run on), and it shows.

Sony spent money on building the resources that Naughty Dog, Santa Monica,  etc. used. Naughty Dog's budgets may not have been huge, but the money Sony spent to make sure their 1st party devs had the tools to thrive was sky high.

If so, that's a good thing. It helped produce better titles.

I'd argue certain things there. Better visuals at the time yes, better games I dont know. I think alot of Uncharted 2's high reviews were due to a game finally showing what Sony promised at the beginning of the generation. Great console visuals. Media fianally had that GAME to say yeah look at it. That overshadowed Uncharted 2 IMO. Uncharted 1 was a better game. Much more enjoyable. Uncharted 2 had alot that could be left out. IMO. So much so I own U3 and yet to play. I just have no drive to start it rigt now. The only drive being its possible visuals to see. That surely says alot about the first game over the 2nd.

OT:

Without a doubt Microsoft only really had 2 developers trying their damndest for visuals for 360 for a long time. Epic and Turn 10. Epic have done amazing considering Unreal Engine 3 is designed for several systems.

And I also think Turn 10 have showed that the 360 is not behind a certain other console in power when comparing like for like a certain racing series with another in the visuals department locked at 60fps.

Playing the demo of Forza Horizon is one thing. But playing the full game is quite amazing stuff. Some of the scenery ( like going through the forest in autmny leaves wile the sunsets. So far the most amazing thing Ive seen a console produce as a fully released game. ) Its like detail + eye watering lighting. Also the first time you see the festival in sight at night. The best lighting Ive seen a console produce by a looooonnnnggg way.

But Halo 4 is not out yet. I hope 343 have squeezed even more out.

Just a shame first party devs didnt push the system 4 years ago.

Crytek are also worth a mention. Currently as games you can buy, Crysis 1 is my 2nd most impressive visuals of any console game. Yes its amazing in some parts. Truly amazing. There is texture issues compared to PC, but no FPS currently on consoles including Crysis 2 impressed quite like Crysis 1 on 360.

Ive finished both Crysis 1 and 2 on the Xbox 360. Not played either on PC.

And Crysis 1 made me stop and stare alot more. Fighting up alongside the river through the forest, inside the mountain and the tank segment and when you come out the mountain and its all ash.

Crysis 1 over Crysis 2 visuals for me on 360. Bare in mind on console the game runs on Cryengine 3 like Crysis 2 though. Not Cryengine 2 like PC.

i don't get what looks so great about halo 4, gears 3 looks 100x better

After watching the first 20 mins of Halo 4, Gears 3 isnt really even close. Halo 4 looks incredible. And its scale wen the...... oh I cant spoil anything for anyone. Its visually stunning.

Halo 4 looks way better than Gears of War 3 and Gears 3 is one of the best looking games out there, its just that beautifull but Halo 4 is a league above. Lighting, Sandbox environments, gorgeous skyboxes etc... Its the most gorgeous game i´ve ever seen and i already saw it in action in a FULL HD with Astro Sound.

Crysis 3 will be up there and probably even better, i know Crysis 2 looks mindblowing even today its one of the best looking Console Games.

Forza Horizon is a league above the others Racers and for now its the best looking game of any Console, even GamesReactor stated this.
