BenVTrigger said: Slimebeast I realize where your coming from but I use the term "blindly hating" because you havent played the game. You never know you could pick the game up and end up loving it and thinking its a 10 / 10 game. I just think its kinda messed up to bash the IGN review when its not even the highest score of a game thats reviewing great. After seeing how low review scores have been this year for Halo 4 to score a 91 as a FPS it must be a monster game. |
I was simply making a point about inflated review scores and what kind of psychological mechanisms are at play behind them, especially since IGN is a big and important site (because it's not always due to the usual allegations: publisher pressure or advertizing bribes. There's also such things as acting like a fanboy and allowing oneself to be caught by hype, and even journalists can do this). It ties to discussions we've had here on the site very recently about the credibility of gaming journalism etc and this is always a big topic, an important topic for gamers.
This time it just happened to be Halo. Next time it could be Call of Duty, Uncharted or Grand Theft Auto.
It wasn't meant as a jab against Halo 4. But I took the opportunity to bring up this as a great case because, while I haven't played the game, the discrepancy between 9.8 versus the reviewer aggregate of 91% was clear for everyone to see and would sort of "back up" my point (don't misunderstand me when I say "back up" because obviously it's not hard facts).
I don't question the quality of Halo 4. It has modern elements that I personally don't like (extensive handholding, kill cams, long cut-scenes) but from my impressions it still seems like a very good game and I'm extremely impressed by the visuals of it among other things.
I myself have said what you just said, that a 91% average Meta-score for a game today, this late in a gen, is extremely high and suggests a very good game.
