I don't pretend to know all smartphones nor the worldwide market, but isn't 1% such a low number that it must be a mistake ?

I noticed that too. Looks like this person completelyl made that number up. Couldn't have been a typo.

OT: My next computer will be a Windows 8 one. Maybe ones of those Surface tablet/laptop hybrids.

Good, I'm glad W8 is doing well!

I've toned down my hate for Apple (compared to me like 6 months ago) but I still like to see Microsoft have success and compete with Apple.

windows has always been popular even vista sold tons. As far as their phone OS which is different, its going to take some times. Their tablet market is where they can do real damage.

I think Microsoft is kicking ass right now, because I have never heard so many people interested in the new OS. I am one of the youngest guys in the factory I work at, so everyone thinks I am a gadget wiz. With that said, I am always asked about new tech, and this OS is the hottest topic I can remember since the PS3/360 got heated back in 09/10. It has quickly surpassed the iPhone and Android topic.

It is crazy, but I even find myself exited about the new direction. After 15 years of displeasure with Microsoft I am finally seeing a bit of fire within the company, and I really like it. If they keep this momentum and drive going, I may find myself as a member of MS's three screen army. Windows Phone 8, Windows 8 Tablet/Laptop Hybrid, and Xbox 8.

The new big three battle of MS, Google, and Apple is the most exiting thing in electronics right now, IMO. With MS supporting games, with Xbox and a rejuvenated PC platform they have a massive lead in my book. Congrats to my neighbors in Redmond.

I am much older and have seen many operating systems and products launch, and I agree!  This is an excieting time again.  It's been a while since hardware and software have both come together to cause excieting new developments.

The Natural User Interface that Microsoft is working on is really excieting.  Now we have computers that can finally speak to and have them listen.  We have been promised that for about 20 years but it never quite delivered.  I still think it needs work - but it is workable.  And with Kinect / movement interfacing - new projection system and virtual glasses. It is an excieting time in technology again.

It's cool to see what is not just on the horizion, but coming into be as we watch.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Top 50 'most fun' game list coming soon!

Tell me a funny joke!

Smartphone operating systems

IDC looked at global smartphone shipments in Q2 2012, placing Android well out in front in terms of operating system share:

Nielsen's figures for Q2 2012 in the US show Android as the leading OS with 51.8% of all currently-owned smartphones, followed by Apple's iOS at 34.3% and the RIM OS at 8.1%:

They also note that the dominance of Android and iOS is even greater among more recent smartphone purchases.

Why did you even post this ??

What has Windows for Pcs have to do with Windows Phone or Smartphone marketshare ?

We all know Android owns the market its no surpirse their phones cost 100$ almost everyone can buy one.

They need to make Surface Phone with Nokia.

Nokia Brand Damage is pretty bad, although they can recover and still sell a shiton of Cell Phones its not the same thing as before and not Samsung Level for sure.

O man, Windows 8 is gonna suck so bad. It's unavoidable. History has already spoken.

Cool story bro!!!

Ain't it?

Seriously, I think it looks like the most cumbersome OS ever conceived. Good for them, if it sells better than 7, but no sir, Win8 not for me.

W8 aint half bad. My computer runs much faster than it did with W7 so that surprised me. Phone wise the Lumia 920 is looking pretty good too. I think I might hold out until MS create their own W8 phone like with the surface tablets though.

I think they are talking JUST the iPhone and not iOS. However, that is stupid as it should include iOS as it calls out all Android devices. Unless its just counting Android phones.. then it may be right. But I'd still think just iPhones are much higher than 1%. Maybe closer to 20%.

No. It's just a mistake.  It's 16.9% for iOS.

IPhone marketshare is 7% by hardware.

Whoa. Wait a sec. I was led to believe IPhones had a monopoly (or at least that what marketing gave the impression).

Iphone is only 7% of all smartphones? IOS includes tablets right? Even so 16.9 is absurdly low given Apple success.
