IPhone marketshare is 7% by hardware.

Whoa. Wait a sec. I was led to believe IPhones had a monopoly (or at least that what marketing gave the impression).
Iphone is only 7% of all smartphones? IOS includes tablets right? Even so 16.9 is absurdly low given Apple success.

The 7% is including all cell phones, smart and dumb alike. At least, that's the only way it makes any sense to me.
Apple has never had a monopoly in phones, smart or otherwise. In early years it was dwarfed by Symbian, now it's dwarfed by Android, but it's never stopped growing share, though growth has slowed. In select Western markets it may have captured 50% share at some point or another, but it's around 25-30% in most developed markets. It is capturing a far, far larger share of mobile profits than its competition, and it has a much stronger ecosystem (software, peripherals, services) than competing platforms, but Apple has never wore the marketshare crown in phones.
As for Windows 8 sales, I wouldn't draw too many conclusions at this point. As has been pointed out, Windows 8 upgrades were available for as little as $15. All these numbers suggest to me is that Windows has about 33% more early adopters than Mac OS. Launch weekend sales are going to rise as OS downloads become easier and software upgrades get cheaper. What really matters for Windows 8 is how those early adopters react to the OS and what IT managers think of it.
