Forums - Sales - X360 is the most successful console of the gen

Well, this should be interesting....

Around the Network

I hate to rain on your xbox parade but the wii is clearly the winner this gen. The xbox only dominates in america if you want to hang your hat on that. Americans are the only ones who will dish out huge sums of money to play xbox live. If you look at the numbers it's 90% united states sales for xbox everywhere else people either have wii, 3ds or ps3 or ps2, psp. Ps2 is still selling very well overseas I think people overlook ps2 and psp's longevity.Xbox biggest challenge is to make there product popular worldwide like there windows software. Most people just do not want to pay the subscription fees that come along with the xbox.

The real reason for the high tie ratio though is that 360 sales are *heavily* skewed towards the US, and US gamers buy the most games by far. Wii and PS3 have a much more even WW distribution. Japan especially, hurts the tie ratio for them.

X360 has a higher tie-ratio than the PS3 and the Wii in N. America, Europe AND JAPAN.

That is amazing! 360 is the most successful console of the gen in Japan then!!

I don't believe that is what he is saying.  He is saying for the people who bought the 360 they favored it more, hence them buying more games for it.  This will ensure that those people continue and buy the nextbox as well.

In Japan, it's skewed because of how few 360s there are in Japan. It's seen as the super hardcore console, so very few outside of big gamers or otaku own one. Those people tend to buy more games and also tend to be multi-console owners.

Yes I know this.  Xbox is not popular in Japan.  I don't understand why Sony is being talked about this at all.  If it is your favorite console that is cool, your choice.  But it's not a successful console in any way.  I love my PS3 because of all the exclusives but at the end of the days I still know it is a failure and I'm not going to make a bunch of lame excuses on why it isn't  Yes it will finish 2nd this generation on units sold, but it will also finish last for the most profits, and lost way too much market to bothe Nintendo and Microsoft.  The Wii is by far my least favorite console of all time that I've owned but it I'm not going to make excuses either, it was the clear winner in pretty much every category this generation like it or not.  The thing pretty much printed money.  All these arguments on who sold the most units, who had the best tie ratio blah blah does not determine success to a company.  That is more of a bragging right.  The only thing I get out of the OP is that people bought more games for X360 than the wii and PS3.  This was pretty much already known as X360 dominates multiplatform sales.  They may not have the most exlclusives but they still sell more games and that shows people like the 360 so it ensure future customers for microsoft seeing as they are satisfied.

Not sure why you're responding to me with this. I don't think any of the consoles are a failure. All did very well, and in some areas, excelled well beyond expectations. The only place where you can really claim a console failed was 360 in Japan, but even then, it was a great step forward from the Xbox, so it's tough to consider.

Yeah I probably shouldn't be replying with you on this matter.  In general this has been all this thread has been though with people making excuses for whatever there preferred consoles has been.

Just imagine if the Wii had as much % in quality titles as PS360.

X360: 9.77

PS3: 8.75

Wii: 8.34

And it only took the X360 an extra year of sales to get there.

Did you completely forget about time as being a part of the equation?   As each year goes by, current owners have that time period to buy new games.  A console with an extra year of sales has that extra year to accumulate a higher software to hardware sales ratio.

The only 2 consoles on your list that can be compared are the PS3 and Wii.

How about we add a monthly component to see how they really stack up.

X360 - 9.77 ratio - 83 months of sale - 0.1177 units of software sold per month per total hardware.
PS3 - 8.75 ratio - 71 months of sale* - 0.1232 units of software sold per month per total hardware.
Wii - 8.34 ratio - 71 months of sale - 0.1174 units of software sold per month per total hardware.

* - Start of Japansese retail availability.

As you can see, the PS3 is actually the leader with the X360 and Wii, very nearly tied, right behind it.  In other words, it's really damn close.
