Forums - Microsoft - Update: Xbox SmartGlass now available on iPad, iPhone and iPod

Web Browsing is becoming quite an easy standard now HTML5 is taking over. Sites like VGC still stuck with lots of fiddly code struggle on Chrome. Fox and IE. But something Im glad at is IE and Windows 8 is optimized for HTML5. So by this time next year as most sites including Youtube shimmy over from Flash fully ( As Adobe no longer supports or updates flash ) IE is in a great position.

I bought a Surface for

1. It does actual computing tasks unlike Ipad or Nexus 7.

2. It talks to my Windows Pone and Xbox for ALL my media needs.

3. I dont want a desktop experience anymore, I dont even make use of my desktop version of Windows 8 Pro. Only use the Metro side.

4. No way would I ever hook up a PC or Laptop to my 42 " HDTV to use Chrome or Firefox when IE on 360 does exactly what I want. Buy goods, check email and VGChartz. etc.

I dont care for owning and fiddling with different OS, different wires, different browsers etc.

Smartglass is fantastic not just from a browser point of view. I just signed a 1 year Xbox Music pass and have 8000 Microsoft points so I can buy ( purchase ) Tv series and HD movies via Xbox video. All can be used across all 3 devices I'll own in less tan 1 month for the 1 time cost.

Genius. No fuss it just works.

Of course I bought Surface for the wrong reasons. I should have got a Nexus 7 or Ipad where I cant do everyday PC tasks.

Have you switched your YouTube account over to HTML 5?

YouTube has a process were you can switch it over to HTML 5, last I tried it is slow, but I haven't tried it on the box.

Go to www.youtube.com/html5 and join the trial on your Xbox 360.

Xbox SmartGlass has launched alongside Windows 8.The free Xbox app enables your PC, tablet and phone to connect to the 360 console to scan the daashboard, flip through content, or us your phone or tablet as a remote. Xbox Music, one of three pre-installed Xbox apps in Windows 8, has also launched, as has Xbox Video and the first wave of Xbox games in Windows 8. You can find out more on the new apps and services through Major Nelson or our post from earlier in the week.

You can download it on the Google play store now only, but only if your android is 4.0 or above. Sadly my phone is not compatible :(

Mine is but I don't have a 360, thus have no need to check it out. :P

Downloaded the app on my phone, pretty neat, it's smooth, responsive and easy to navigate.

I think it's rather amazing they are incorporating not only Windows products (tablets, phones, etc.) but also Android and Ipad. The cross integration is quite an achievement and quite open minded for Microsoft.

I also hear that its great for something like Dance Central 3, where people can be playing the game, and other look through the songs, and que up the next on for when it's there turn. All without going to Dance Central 3's main screen. Sounds great for a party!

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Top 50 'most fun' game list coming soon!

Tell me a funny joke!

Being able to control IE via Smartglass is gonna be great. Like having a mouse and keyboard in your lap.

Wont be long now till my Surface RT arrives.

Just use your Surface! Why did you buy a Surface if it's not for the convience and portability? If it's just for the novelty then it's just beyond reason, tablets and smart phones are for "on the move" and "low power consumption," not so you turn on multiple other things to browse the web and watch TVs with when you already have your 360 controller and Kinect. I really hope you didn't buy the Surface for the wrong reasons Selnor, because if you want a stationary web browsing experience that's actually good on a monitor or HDTV, you'd use Google Chrome, not something like IE on the 360 for heaven's sake.

Of course I bought Surface for the wrong reasons. I should have got a Nexus 7 or Ipad where I cant do everyday PC tasks.

1. Has nothing to do with anything I'm talking about, and you should have waited for the pro version if you want actual computing tasks, the current one is RT which means it runs on ARM based processer, in this case, it's a Tegra 3, you won't be able to run x86 apps on it. The pro version coming in later will cost a little more but those will be Core i Processors then you'd have a much better device for actual computing tasks, what I'm trying to say is that you went for it too early, not to mention first edition of any Windows release without major service packs are bug bound to the oblivion. Too early!

2. I'd seriously hope so, it's suppose to, but you definitely can use your almighty phone for most of it too, think of it as a bigger screened Windows Phone, of course though, Tegra 3 is most likely much better than what you have on your phone so hopefully your experience will be better, the down side is that Tegra 3's audio chipset embedded inside is not very good so don't expect killer quality audio from it. I know this because I own a Tegra 3 tablet. Also, there is a resolution difference between the RT and Pro, one is 1366x768 and the other is 1920x1080, it's clear which is better for multimedia.

3. Too early, should have waited for Surface Pro.

4. You can do that on your Surface! Your viewing distance to your TV will be pretty much the same as you looking down on the 11inch screen tablet with a keyboard dock, and the Surface will most likely provide a better browsing experience based on the fact that it has more RAM than the 360. The whole 360 thing is a useless gimmicky marketing ploy.

When I said I hope you are not doing it for the wrong reasons, I mean owning a tablet at all, not that you should buy something else. This is not a "what's better" discussion I'm trying to have with you. I've been doing consulting for a long time for professionals and friends/family alike. If the listed are what you are looking for, then hopefully I have shed some light on the situation for you. You are better off with the Surface Pro according to what you are really looking for.

Microsoft has release the iOS version of Xbox SmartGlass, an app for controlling your console via mobile devices. The free app is universal; grab it on iTunes. SmartGlass went live for PC alongside Windows 8 last week and is also available on Android and Windows Phone devices.

Thanks, Kotaku.

I think it was smart for MS to release it much earlier than the date they originally was going for. I applaude them for not being ass hats =)
