Has any company ever definitively made money on an F2P game?

Zynga was making TONS of bank, right up until the total collapse.

Nope. You see how clever their PR is to make you believe that?

Free-to-play exists on Sony systems, too. Dust 514 is a F2P MMO coming to PS3 and Vita, and Phantasy Star Online 2 is also coming to Vita next year.

Buying PSO2 etc. and then playing for free is not free to play LOL.

Nintendo could make free to play work. What do we consider swapnote?

What is this mysterious swapnote you talk about? (I actually know it I just wanted to show that Europe does not have swapnote for 3ds!!!! WHY NINTENDO!??!)

Who said it had to be bought first? I'm going off of this: http://www.joystiq.com/2012/09/26/phantasy-star-online-2-is-free-to-play-on-vita/

It wouldn't be free-to-play if you had to buy it.  It's a free download from the Playstation Store.  For free.  Free.

(There is a retail option for the PC if you want the option, apparently)

As mentioned Sony has Dust 514 and Phantasy Star 2. Don't forget PlayStation Home's large collection, along with Free Realms, DC Universe, and Vita games like Tales of Montezuma Blitz, Treasure Park, Fireworks, Table Soccer, Cliff Diver, and Froshiber Says.

My advice, reword OP and/or admit the thread is irrelevant unless you argue a case F2P is going to be more important to Nintendo's target market.

Sony apparently doesn't have a very open and supportive F2P system, as noted by the article I linked to in one of my previous points. Crytek is apparently not being supported to publish Warface on the system. http://www.freemmostation.com/news/crytek-conspiracy-microsoft-sony-and-nintendo-against-f2p/

My thread is still relevant, even if you don't feel like addressing all the points I made.

Why are the same industry professionals who herald F2P gaming (and doom console gaming) not talking positively (or at all) about F2P games heading to consoles, such as Nintendo is openly supporting?

If Nintendo so nonchalantly is open towards F2P gaming, and Sony and Microsoft do not open up more than they currently are, then it could be a big play in the future. If Nintendo does take the reigns on this F2P gaming venture, you can bet Sony and Microsoft will follow suit in the coming years.

That article you linked is crap, btw. It doesn't say anything, no details, nothing. Just a mention they check in with Microsoft serveral times and aparently had similar responses from Sony and Nintendo. It sounds more likely that Crytek's demands are more than what they are willing to accept or maybe they just don't agree with the F2P format they are using. Either way Nintendo is in that boat too. So far Sony is the most open F2P console as it has plenty of F2P games.

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

Is your whole argument hinging on this article?  Because it says multiple times in it that Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo have been reluctant to embrace the F2P model, which was in June.  Your interview with Reggie seems to indicate Nintendo must have changed their mind about this, which is great.  Equally, Sony or Microsoft could have changed their minds too.  At least Sony have a fair few examples of embracing F2P under their belt.

Once we see some positive action from Nintendo towards F2P, then it'll be a different story.  Even in that interview with Reggie he seems to skirt around the issue, talking about 'all business models' rather than F2P specifically, and pointing out that there may be flaws in the model.

I understand what you're getting at about this being a bigger play for Nintendo if they embrace it better, but right now there's just two conflicting viewpoints on whether they are in fact embracing it or not.  We'd need to see some action first, in my opinion :P

Umm I have Swapnote here in Germany and so do all my friends.

Ongoing bet with think-man: He wins if MH4 releases in any shape or form on PSV in 2013, I win if it doesn't.

Oh shit for whatever reason I confused swapnote with the "app" that lets you draw animated animes etc.

He is actually pointing out that there are flaws in the ways developers have been creating F2P games, not flaws in the F2P model itself. Unless he mentions it elsewhere and I didn't see.

You are right that the article states Nintendo as well as the other two. My idea is that if Nintendo has changed their philosophy and opens up Wii U as an open platform for F2P gaming, it could be a huge deal. But no one seems to be caring at all about this potential selling point, even Nintendo themselves. It's weird.

I would imagine that whoever really opens up to F2P gaming is really going to change the console market in a very disruptive way - I could be wrong, but who knows. To me, it seemed like Nintendo might be first to do that based on Reggie's interview. Hence, the thread.

You could be right, I guess we'll have to wait and see.  What I thought it sounded more like is that Nintendo will embrace mostly anything on the platform, which will probably see PS3-levels of F2P support.  Some nice titles here and there (and maybe more if the market grows), but nothing earth-shattering.

Perhaps I'm wrong though!
