Forums - Nintendo - Wii-U: No "system based" voice chat

I'm getting a Wiiu launch day, but there no excusses for this. Looks like it will be an exclusive box only, for me. This is a big deal.

I'm confused. So no one will be able to use the built-in mic on the GamePad for chatting in multiplayer games like Black Ops 2?

Overall it doesn't bother me; I could careless about voice chat with random people.

WRONG !!! You couldn't, COULDN'T , care less !! Why the fuuuuuu.. do so many people keep making this mistake ??? If you could care less about something, that means you COULD CARE less about something ! Obama COULD CARE LESS if his country gets nuked, does that mean he doesn't care about that, because he could care less? NO! You could be completely passionate about something, and you can still ''care less'' about it. ''Could care less'' tells us absolutely nothing about your stance on Care-O-meter. Again, COULDN'T, not could

Let's be honest here for a minute, folks. We all know how PSN and especially XBL can at times deteriorate into high-pitched scream fests and contests to see who can lob the most 4 letter words or racial slurs at others, especially during popular multiplayer games like Halo and COD for instance, right?

OK... now imagine playing a game like COD on the Wii U with voice chat available right out of the box via the Gamepad or a packed-in mic so the vast majority of Nintendo's primary audience has access to it. *shudders*

Trust me, you'll be glad Nintendo decided to go this route.

lolo

Maybe I'm crazy but what's the benefit to chat with someone you're not in the same game with?

Have you never been on Skype with someone while you're playing different games on Steam?  Or even just sent messages to someone who's in a different game to you on PSN/XBL/PC?

I suppose the premise is that many people keep in touch across media such as games nowardays.  As much as I'd love to continue couch gaming with the friends I grew up with; lives move on, people move off to University or new jobs elsewhere.  Gaming habits don't change though, and being able to keep in touch through games is a good idea, in my opinion.  If you're limited to only talking to each other when you're both in the same game, it's a bit of a drawback if one of you wants to play FIFA and the other wants to play LittleBigPlanet.  I know this is a problem I often come across on PS3.  We send messages, sure, but it's clunky and nowhere near as fun as simply talking to each other.

At least, that's my take on it.  PS3 doesn't have cross-game chat and I 'get by' without it, but I sure would prefer to have it given the option (which isn't an option on PS3 due to RAM or whatever).

Its not game related and thus I have a cell phone for that. Its pointless. If I have a headset its for in-game communication... not random chatting with someone else. If that's the case, I call them or text them. Hell, I don' teven want to have a random convo with someone else when I'm playing a game... I'm playing a game and want to focus on that.

As long as I can chat with people in game, that is perfect. I never understood why people made it such an issue with PS3 vs 360.

I no longer own a 360, but cross game chat is the feature I miss the most. Sony got it right with the Vita by making sure to include cross game chat with up to eight people in a single room, so expect to see this on the PS4 as well as the NextBox.

For the Wii U, being as anti Nintendo as I am, I'm only purchasing the console for exclusives, so it doesn't bother me too much, but I'd really like to be able to talk to friends while I'm playing something that they might not be playing. I play a decent amount of casual/well known titles, but atleast 30-50% of the games I own are the more niche lesser known titles, that are almost always better than the casual games that get much better scores. Because of this I really love the cross game chat feature, so I can play a better game and still be able to talk to friends. :P

IGN FORUM:  Nintendo has instead opted to allow developers to include the feature on a game-by-game basis. In a strange move, however, the GamePad's built-in mic will apparently not be the default source for voice chat. The publisher revealed that gamers will likely have to turn to third-party options to find headsets with built-in mics, and then plug those accessories into the Pad itself.

I think this is because devs are pushing for more control. They are moving away from the closed Live system where MS is king and want to implement their own control. The future is Steam, Online, Origin, Uplay, COD Elite, etc.. Devs want to be able to monitor their games 24/7, push updates, focus on security, etc.. Atleast N has developed a platform that gives the devs the hardware and options to include the stuff we gamer's believe is standard. Now devs can implement there own goals, challenges, achievements, and rewards systems in their own online service. The can implement their own voice chat features for their games. I think this is a win for all. A closed system with standards was good for gamers. I think an open system will push innovation and be good for gamers and developers."

"I agree with you 100%. The Wii U looks to me like a very open system that gives developer control, and that could be one of the reasons why developers love the Wii U so much. It's like PC, it's an open platform where you can game however you want. You can use all kinds of different services like Steam, Origin, Uplay, or whatever fits your needs, and voice chat on PC can be done in many ways and whatever you decide to use is based on what you prefer. Developer control and gamer control. For example, I choose to use Steam even though there are many other options on PC, and even though Steam includes a built in voice chat, I use Skype due to better sound quality. Wii U looks to be a similar type of open platform, which will promote better development and better control for what the gamer wants."

I do agree with the suspected approach.

with 1 Gb reserved it seems odd they aren't doing cross game chat. surely nintendo has seen the critiques against sony over the last 6 years.

Considering that feature didn't come to the XBox 360 till November 2008, its only been almost 4 years.
