Forums - Gaming - Skyrim Dawnguard PS3: Punished for choosing wrong console

PlayStation fans are perfectly justified in being mad here. Bethesda clearly has no idea what they're doing.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Around the Network

The issues with that Bethesda is having with the PlayStation 3 and Skyrim, as well as its DLC, is unfortunate, but the implication that someone should get something free or a discount on a completely independent title is obscene.

Without a question, Bethesda had a bug that create issues after so many hours of game play. They were able to resolve it with the Xbox 360 because the architecture allowed for it, and as much as possible they were able to resolve it for the PS3.

Its clear that Bethesda underestimated the limitations of the PS3's memory architecture. It's equally unfortunate that gamers underestimate the limitations of it as well. The PS3 has 265MB of memory available to the Cell processor, 50MB of that is utilized by the OS, leaving a scant 215MB to the game.

If there is anyone here who feels that they're capable of developing a game that can provide the complexity and graphic level of Skyrim on a PS3, I'm sure the folks at Bethesda would like to talk to you. I'm fairly certain that if there was anyone here or otherwise on the Internet capable of providing that assistance then they would have been in communication with Bethesda.

I don't think people here understand how small 215MB is in relationship to such a complex application. I have an app for my laptop that 99% of the time does absolutely nothing except periodically check to see if there are any updates from the manufacturer and it consumes 20MB. Do people understand how efficient the code for Skyrim is? Do you even know what it means to make efficient code?

Granted, as a consumer what is involved in what they have done make the game and have done to correct some of the issues matters little. Would it be in Bethesda's best interest to offer a discount to PS3 owners who purchased the game on DLC, once the problem is fix, sure. Should they receive a discount on a game unrelated or receive a game or DLC for free, no. Not unless Sony is going to foot the bill.

This is much a black mark on Sony as it is on Bethesda. If Sony didn't have such crap hardware, then the limitations that Bethesda is running into wouldn't have been present and everyone would have been happy. The alternative would have been that Bethesda never brought the game to the PS3, or a severely gimped version of the game, but where would that leave us? With PS3 loyalists bitching, demanding for something they don't deserve, and threatening to boycott Bethesda. The same spot we are in now. The only benefit would be that for Bethesda they would have saved themselves the hassle of publishing the game on the PS3 and having to deal with the issues created by the piss-poor architecture of the PS3.

Face it people, in the immortal words of the last Templar in "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade", you chose...poorly. I agree it is a bitter pill to swallow, especially after finding out this late in the console's life, but the PS3 isn't capable of delivering the same gaming experiences that the Xbox 360 or PC can. That isn't because Bethesda is shit at developing, that's because the architecture of the PS3 is shit. The same reason why so few third-party studios brought their biggest games to the Wii is reflective of the same ceiling that the PS3 is now hitting. I'm sure the Xbox 360 will run into a ceiling soon, but the fact is the architecture of the Xbox 360 gives developers significantly more headroom than the architecture of the PS3 gives them.

You can bitch and moan all you want, but you can't argue that it doesn't. You can't argue that you can do better, because if you could you would have already. So, honestly, stop. It does nothing but make PS3 loyalists look like whiny-ass-bitch-losers. Stop blaming developers for limitations of the architecture of the hardware. I understand, the architecture is an immovable object that you can't change and for which your champion Sony created. I understand you don't want to see a fault in Sony where one absolutely exists. It's like seeing your father cry for the first time in your life. It changes everything. However, even Sony makes mistakes. Sometimes, when we put our faith in corporations and the products we purchase from them, we too make mistakes. It happens. Deal with it. Move on. Most importantly though, stop bitching blaming everyone else and stop bitching about it. It's getting absolutely tiring.

Let me just say that I feel sorry for the people who bought the game while only owning a PS3.

But anyone with a PS3 and Xbox360 and/or PC and knew of the problems with the PS3 Fallout version and still bought Skyrim for PS3 has simply done something wrong. This is partially your fault.

The expansion isn't something great, so I don't get what the issue is here. Besides, skyrim is most probably overrated anyway. Judging from oblivion of course.

And PS3 fallouts have not much problem from my experience.

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

PS3 owners are boycotting Dishonored?

What are the chances it's because it has Bethesda's name on it and they've been screwed over so many times, long before Dawnguard and have learned not to trust anything with their name.

My bet is we will see Fallout 4 on these consoles. IF so, IF they can't fix the issues they should just skip the ps3...alot of money but its just going to tarnish their name further if they put another shitty port on ps3. Replace it With a Wii U- Version.

Atto Suggests...:

Book - Malazan Book of the Fallen series

Game - Metro Last Light

TV - Deadwood

Music - Forest Swords

1. I work in retail. This has had zero impact on Dishonored sales.

2. Dont blame Bethesda blame the PS3. Its a know fact that the PS3s RAM can barely handle Skyrim and thats the problem. Both Sony and Bethesda know it thats why theres been no fix. Its a hardware problem not a software problem
