| Proclus said: The Forbes article is sneakily "forgetting" the real reason Playstation is "doomed", Sony's overall financials, if Playstation was altogether a different company not related to Sony none of these "Playstation is going down" articles would exist. Anyways, I'm sure Sony will get their act together... eventually. |
If PlayStation was altogether different company they'd already be out of business. Losing $300+ dollars per unit would have crippled an independent console manufacturer.

@vv
I thought the same thing.
I was like, is this a forum member?
Anyway, anyone thinking sony would pull out of hardware for consoles is clueless.
This gen has just been bad for sony. It was a mistake to use such a complex configuration despite its advantages.
it was a mistake to not have a fully featured online already in lace.
lots of mistakes were made, but that doesnt mean they're ready to abandon the hardware conceot.

I have to say also that sony is learning.
Sony is learning from ms, who didnt jump through hoops for piracy, didnt drop prices, had tons of different skus and bundles, pushed instead for retails deals, etc.

Its the hip thing to do to bash 360. So when the numerically less internet 360 fans try to fire back against the numerically majority Ps3 fans, its a total outrage amiright? People, like the author, neglect gen over gen sales. |
No one is denying the fact that Playstation has lost marketshare.
It happens all the time. You can't be #1 forever. Look at nintendo with the Nintendo 64 and Gamecube. Both are much more of a flop than the PS3, in terms of sales and game library.
| osed125 said: Not saying Sony is doomed, but the article only mentioned that the PS3 sold almost the same as the 360 (in a shorter time), he doesn't take into consideration how much money Sony lost in the first couple of years, doesn't matter if the PS3 will outsell the 360. |
No one ever mentions the $1Billion+ Microsoft lost on the RROD epidemic either.
The Xbox 360 isn't as profitable as many believe.

this. and with nintendo it does not matter if they sell like 95 million + 150 million of units of his systems... for sony fans nintendo is doomed, and sony in the red a decade ago and recieving cuts from all they business is like "no sony is good" they are goign to release a quantum leap machine because they can!!!.. is time to be realistic. |
Wii sales have been in decline for years now. That's the reason for the Nintendo is doomed artciles. Nintendo is only in the video games business. Nintendo will barely enter the HD era with the Wii U(with such a small HDD!) and a primitive online network. Nintendo may be 1st in console sales, but they are 3rd in the digital segmetns which are growing rapidly.
Yeah, Sony has been in the red for many many years, but that is mostly due to their TV/Mobile divisions.
Didnt some of the Sony is doom articles come from Forbes?
As has been said repeatedly already, that was a very poor article. Hunches and opinions, little more. Nobody ever brings up the actual reasons why people should be concerned for Sony's well being and it has almost nothing to do with the Playstation name at all.
The end of their fiscal year in March 2012, they had a net income of -456 billion yen (5.79 billion dollars) and another loss this first quarter. They have $135 billion in debt on $166 billion in assets (ycharts.com for this one) and their stocks still haven't rebounded. Their stockholders have already shown that they were getting testy (though I would be too if it lost 1/3 of the total stock value in two years) and you don't want angry shareholders. They're now two steps from Junk level bonds from S&P and Moody's and are one step away at Fitch and that causes some pretty serious issues when it comes to having to pay interest on their debts. There are more problems, but those sum things up nicely.
The Playstation brand, even with the lukewarm reception and sales of the Vita, is at least getting close to breaking even this fiscal year and has been reasonably profitable otherwise. The Vita might be doomed or it might not, it's hard to tell at this point. Even still, the entire gaming division isn't even close to being their dominant business. One article speaks of hope that the gaming division would hit a billion dollars in profits this year. While nice, that wouldn't help the corporate situation much if they keep on their current road.
This is all just my own opinion, of course, with facts tossed about, but I think people should be more concerned about Sony turning into the next Kodak if they don't fix their business.
You mean nobodies who write blogs that no one reads and work at home depot part time, then go home to their imaginary "journalism career," have no idea what their talking about?
My goodness lol....
Lisa! You're tearing me APART, Lisa!!!
