Not saying Sony is doomed, but the article only mentioned that the PS3 sold almost the same as the 360 (in a shorter time), he doesn't take into consideration how much money Sony lost in the first couple of years, doesn't matter if the PS3 will outsell the 360.

No one ever mentions the $1Billion+ Microsoft lost on the RROD epidemic either.
The Xbox 360 isn't as profitable as many believe.

They made back that billion and then some. It isnt the 5-6 billion that PS3 lost for simply "existing" in its first few years.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

"It’s the hip thing to do, apparently, to predict the end of the PlayStation brand or claim that because the PS3 sold a couple million fewer units than the Xbox 360 (despite its shorter overall run) that the next console from Sony will surely be its last or will come stillborn."

Its the hip thing to do to bash 360. So when the numerically less internet 360 fans try to fire back against the numerically majority Ps3 fans, its a total outrage amiright?

People, like the author, neglect gen over gen sales.

Are you saying there are more "360 is doomed" articles than there are "PS3/Sony is doomed"?

Funny....I though it was "hip" to predict the end of the Nintendo brand or claim that Nintendo should stop making hardware. The pendulum keeps swinging!

I wouldn't say that any company or product line is necessarily doomed, but I do think that it is fair to say that Sony hasn't demonstrated that they have really learned from their mistakes and if they repeat them with the PS4 the Playstation line could be in serious trouble ... There is also another risk that Sony could overcompensate for the mistakes they made with the PS3 and the PS4 may suffer for it.

I wish people would give all consoles an equal shot. Without competition companies will never strive to further improve the gaming experience.

I was walking down along the street and I heard this voice saying, "Good evening, Mr. Dowd." Well, I turned around and here was this big six-foot rabbit leaning up against a lamp-post. Well, I thought nothing of that because when you've lived in a town as long as I've lived in this one, you get used to the fact that everybody knows your name.

This point is probably the most salient in regards to Sony's health. If Sony gave the PS3 away for free, I'm sure they'd get an installed base beyond the PS2's, but the point of being in business is to make money.

IIRC, the RRoD fund was set aside but I don't recall MS announcing how much of that was actually spent. I think they just wanted the liability off the books ongoing. FWIW, I've seen estimates that MS makes $1B+ anually on xbox live gold subs alone.

Xbox Live alone made 1 billion in a year profit this gen, so yes it is.  Kinect as also been a huge money spinner too

Well, having "Forbes" in the title makes it more legit.

When the argument of whether to be or not to be a manufacturer doesn't consider the factor that consoles are being sold at a loss and the revenue from royalties and 1st party software sales, it can't really be taken seriously.
