I knew te Vita would not sell when it was announced. They are trying to sell to a market almost entirely owned by Nintendo. And they don't have the games to compete.

If I knew we would see these terrible sales. Surely Sony did.

Vita is easily the only console what has had consistent negativity thrown at it from the get go.

That is not true. I fact the Vita has been has been vowed before its release and even after launch ... but then there came the problems: lackluster game line-up after launch, people realize that they must buy very expensive memory cards and felt fooled by sony, sonys big financial crisis so that many people dont have faith in sonys future, 3ds gots many new and great games. And at the moment even high anticipated Vita games ended in dumbed down versions (like Little Kings Story or Fifa).

This all cummulated in very low sales for the Vita. Sony had it all at the beginning: Good sales, good publicity, the Vita could have been a success, but Sony failed and now its to late to save the Vita.

So FIFA 13 didn't do nearly as good as assumed. Black Ops 2 Declassified looks like another cheap game that is nowhere near the PC/console versions. NFS is not a big seller anymore, so all that's left is Assassin's Creed Liberation.

Doesn't look too good IMO.

Don't forget the 10 year plan. Judging Vita before its first half decade is preposterous!

This.

This is the last time goal posts can be moved though.  First it was wait 'til TGS and now Sony says wait 'til Xmas - which is fair.  But am not sure those three games are gonna do the trick.  Especially in Japan, where content is needed stat.

Very interested to see how Vita does.  Gonna be a fun holiday this year, tracking Wii U and Vita sales.

They did it with ps3 and 3ds as well. Its very rare for a brand as established as playstation to fail. I am sure when call of duty comes it will start selling. People need patience.

Neither PS3 nor 3DS were in as bad a position as 3DS is.

PS3 was lucky enough to have 360 as a port buddy, so 3rd parties didn't have to pass them by because of their low sales or difficult architecture. Funnily enough, 360 contributed to saving the PS3.

We knew 3DS had the big games coming and it was selling about 2 or 3 times better than Vita even before the pricecut.

Of the two big games I know that are coming for the Vita this holiday, COD & AC, the COD looks and, according to impressions I've read, plays like shit.

AC is looking good.

I think the difference between Vita and PS3 is that Sony subsidized the PS3, IIRC.  They aren't in the same position to do that with the Vita.  Same with Nintendo, they were in a position to take a hit financially and cut the price of the 3DS.

I don't think Call of Duty will sell Vitas, it doesn't look very good.  I think AssCreed will be the big game for it.  We'll see if it can push systems though.  Might be tough with AssCreed3 releasing on HD consoles.

@Kowen It hasn't been out a year in Japan yet though. Close, but not yet.

@benao87 They didn't say that the sales were unacceptable, of course they wish they sold more, they've said it several times before already. Summer sales are usually crappy, Vita just especially so.

@blugamer23 There is good reason to believe that the Vita is a profitable hardware, at least break even. Software and accessory sales are adding enough profits to make the console profitable right off the bat, even if the Vita is selling for a small loss which is unlikely given the cost breakdown announced after its release.

@slimebeast Really man? No decency. When the Vita starts selling well, I hope you feel bad about statements like that.

@OP I agree, the thing needs a Christmas. The consumer environment is extremely negative, fueled by competitive BS cultivated in the fans of a certain product/service. Very sad to see that the dawn of the troll can have such an effect on human behavior.

The Vita though, has a lot going for it; games, apps, features. It's amazing, but I think they messed up their launch. The earthquake and flooding delayed it from a holiday release last year worldwide. That probably reduced its launch potential due to the low sales in Japan after launching there, kind of scared the rest of the world from buying the Vita. News coverage was very critical of the system for its Japanese sales. Japan should not have gotten the go ahead on schedule while the rest of the world was delayed. Japan had the weakest regional software lineup and Sony tripped up their sales for the rest of the world that way.

A simultaneous February launch would have had more success, kept higher numbers leading up to the summer and prevented a lot of negative publicity due to low sales. They didn't generate more sales by launching in Japan on time, hell a Golden week launch would have worked more in their favor. Vita has become a cultural target, it's market faith is well shaken and all for immature reasons, but hey, that's how the market is and Sony has made its mistakes. I just wish people were a little bit more decent and educated.

Sure, blame Vita's problems all on message board trolls.  And people in Europe and the Americas don't care if it had low sales in Japan - if the machine was enticing enough they would've purchased it regardless.  The Vita isn't getting it any worse than the Wii did in it's hayday - and that console was a beast.

I think you're being way too melodramatic.  It's really not that hard to figure out why Vita isn't selling and Sony alluded to that in the OP.

I do sorta agree with him.

Holidays are when consoles/handhelds really sell.
Vita hasn't had one yet.(It launched late in the holiday in Japan).

But that is still not a good excuse. Vita is selling HORRIBLY. Holiday or not holiday...sales should be higher. The content is there and there is great content coming this year. If it doesn't manage to sell with a holiday and great games, then there's really nothing that can be done.

oooh the irony

how many times has SONY judged other systems ahead of their 1st Xmas and even their LAUNCH DATE ??

fu Sony, i mean really fu
