Forums - Microsoft - "Someone stupid at MS is probably equating the PEGI 18 rating with the AO rating in the US"

Oopsy daisy

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

What I gather from HappySqurriel's explanation is that there isn't much of a difference between the rating systems. It's just that violence isn't as accepted in Europe as in America, so a lot of the games that are rated M get pushed up to the PEGI 18 rating while on the other hand games with light sexual content that get away with PEGI 12 are rated M in America instead of T.

So Europeans love sex and Americans love violence... I need to relocate.

not an issue really. MS will see the error and fix it to include pegi 18 as it really is within the bounds of M ratings. M just envelopes pegi 16 and pegi 18 together in one rating.

Rethinking this.

ESRB M means 15 and up.

ESRB AO means 18 and up (adults only).

So really M does = PEGI 16 and AO should = PEGI 18.

MS is right and in reality, the PEGI group needs to rate games like COD PEGI 16 to match ESRB M.

No, m is 17 and up, just like r rated movies

The more I hear about Windows 8, the more sure I am that I'll stick with Windows 7. Probably the best thing about Windows is that it's an open system. I really don't like that they're trying to force the X-box Live/Apple model onto PC.

Anyway, Microsoft would be pretty stupid not to change this rule. Surely this will drive more AAA devs onto Steam and Origin instead of using the Windows marketplace.

And that new functionality will benefit games because...? What is it?

From what little I've read, I think for games it'd be GFWL/Xbox Live related stuff... Achievements, Friends List, possibly some PC crossover with 360/720 and Surface etc.

Win 8 is as open as Win 7(like the notch news from few weeks ago, actually the rules is nothing change from win7,people just don't read the rules),the close system is Win RT

I could be wrong but to me this sounds like a problem with the PEGI rating system ...

From what I can tell the ESRB created ratings that were based on movie ratings and Mature is (roughly) the same as R-rated, and AO is (roughly) the same as NC-17. The problem is that PEGI doesn't have an equivalent rating which is a massive mistake.

What makes a movie NC-17 instead of R?

99% of the time sex. NC-17 movies are almost never ever ever put in theatre which means they end up failing. the MPAA actually counts moans, groans, and body parts shown in movies and randomly decides what is what. I stopped looking at what the ratings are years ago because its in fact, not regulated at all, and the people who do the ratings ( who are supposed to only work for 1-2 years tops) have been working much longer then that.

Everyone who says PEGI is wrong is insane. This is Microsoft's fault, plain and simple. They don't understand Europe at all. Over here, being 18 rated is not a bad thing. It's not the end of the world. Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, Resident Evil 6...all of these games are rated 18, because they're full of violence and blood, etc. They sell, by the bucketload, because there's nothing wrong with titles being meant for adults. In America, a game being only for adults is seen as some massive crime, everything has to be 'R' or 'M' so a 13-year-old can buy it, and if something's AO it's the end of the world and retailers won't even stock it. It's ridiculous. For that reason, in reality, AO DOES NOT equal PEGI 18, as the 18 is more like an M in practice. Publishers/devs will not release edited versions for Windows 8, I guarantee it.

Why not release for win8?it just for win8 store, not for win8 itself
There's already had some hentai game can play in win8

I would say it is ESRB's fault for having something so unspecific as M. 18 is 18, 16 is 16 there is no doubt what that means
