Forums - Nintendo Discussion - "no one is playing games on Wii" - Mike Goodman. "ROFFLE!!!" - My response

And who's fault is that? When you say new IPs aren't breaking 250k but the only one you can name that should (and still could) is Zack & Wiki, I repeat once again, exactly who's fault is that? You can't exactly complain about the lack of quarter million selling non-launch thid party new IPs released between the period of October to December 2007 that have two i's in their titles when there are none.

You can't invent rules to create "bad signs," people need to make up their minds. Everytime their point is proven wrong they come up with some new extremely detailed qualification. And poor Zack & Wiki is always getting tossed around as some example like it was some end-all-be-all game in the last 10 years.

"Nobody plays Wii games!! WII DOOMED!"

"Wii sold the most software over the holidays and has a highr attach rate than PS3."

"Well...nobody plays 3rd party games! They don't sell! WII DOOMED!"

"Here's a list of several successful 3rd prty titles in America alone."

"Well...none of them are new IPs! Thats a bad sign! WII DOOOOOOMED! Zack and Wiki! ZACK AND WIKIIIIIIIIII!!1111 WII DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMED!"

1) i apologize, besides red steel carnival games also got on there.

2) the ability for third parties to make new ips is a sign of a healthy ecosystem. if all new ips fail, than the market is stagnating. its not hard to understand that. if nothing new can enter a market, than it is a bad and unfair market. which in the end hurts the consumer.

OK, so tell me, how many new IPs third parties have introduced to the Wii-something new and original like oh say, Assasin's Creed for the PS3/360? I give props to Red Steel and perhaps Zak and Wiki, but we all knew that game was going to bomb in the first place considering there was a campaign to save it months before released. Healthy ecosystem, my ass.

yes.....people don't know how good it is.....the box-art is not the best.....they need to adverise it.....

i hope launch sales in europe are better

This is from another thread on the first page of this section. Its only NA sales and I don't think its even a complete list. 250k in one of the major territories is surely a successfull game.

Now take into consideration that this is the first year of a console that was written off by the entire industry and third parties especially and I think you will see something remarkable.

i see one new ip on there, and its a launch title. that is where i draw the line. if no non launch new ip can muster up 250k thats a bad sign. and dont say there hasnt been any good ones. i have heard of the zack and wiki campaign.

I don't see how you draw that conclusion at all.  First of all these are US Numbers ONLY, so that 250k is fantastic.  Remember that a game that does 1m during its entire lifetime is considered to be a high achievement that only about 3% (estimation) of titles reach.

More than that the console was literally written off by every major analyst and most developers and publishers as well.  But in addition I stated quite clearly that this list is most likely not complete in the first place.  So drawing conclusions based on what  is lacking from the list is invalidated by that point alone.

As for Z&W, the game was horribly under advertised.  You do realize that the "Buy Zack & Wiki Campaign" was orgnanized by IGN right?  Why would an uninterested part need to avertise for the game if it was being done properly?  The answer is that it wasn't.  Most of the people who purchased the game have stories about clerks asking "WTH is that game?  I've never heard of it.".   If you think Z&W had a good ad campaign you have been sorely misinformed.

Endless Ocean is 2nd party, as its published by Nintendo. This means it was developed by a third party, however, so perhaps you could argue this one.

But Disaster:DoC is straight out first party now. Developed by Monolith, a subsidiary of Nintendo, and published by Nintendo.

Bleh, could have sworn that one was third party.....oh well, got any others you can think of that I should ADD?

As for endless ocean...the line people always use is "3rd party devs" so if the dev is 3rd party the game is 3rd party imo.  I'm kind of anti-2nd party in terms of terminology =P

Name me ONE of those games (yes even with NA sales alone) that hasn't returned more profit than, say, Heavenly Sword, Lair, Gundam Musou, Hot Shots Golf 5, and most other PS3 games. Yeah, you won't find one. The fact that a game might sell 250k only (NA alone) doesn't mean it failed if it needed 100k to return a profit.
