So once again 3ds sales are below expectations, clealry an indicator of the smartphone market dominating the "dedicated market."
Do you have a point, or are you going to continue agreeing with me lol...

I did have a point but I'm now confused as to what the point we are arguing about is so I'll retreat and have a cup of tea and a ciggy.
I just hope vita and 3ds manage to combat the smartphone onslaught. Dedicated provides quality.

Isn't the 3DS the fastest selling system of all time?
I'm one who doesn't care about sales and how many games a system has. But it's the quality of games that matter.
The only game the 3DS has coming out that I think is worth purchasing is Code of Princess. There's also Rayman Origins and Sonic All Star Racing, but it's a port and a multiconsole title, something people either own already or are going to own on another console.
The Vita has only been getting a few releases, but a lot of these releases have been quality. While that quality is mostly contained to first party titles like Wipeout 2048, Unit 13, Gravity Rush, and LBP2, it's still quality nonetheless(there are some good third party titles though.) The Vita's first year is finally coming to a close, although that's only in Japan, still another few months in other areas,) and this is where the flood gates have been unhinged. Or maybe flood gates is too much. Whatever. The Vita is getting some good games these next couple months.
As someone who owns both the Vita and 3DS, I've felt my 3DS has mostly been a waste of money. The few exclusives that have came from Nintendo as first party haven't been as good as what you'd expect would come from them. Super Mario Land 3D and New Super Mario Bros 2 were both disappointments, and Mario Kart 7 was a great game outside of the fact that I've started to get bored of the series because I quit playing it in less than a week. The only other games have been third party titles and there hasn't been much of an offering there aside from games I already own on another system, games that are actually mini games on games I own on another system, or Resident Evil Revelations. Heroes of Ruin is good, but way too short.
The 3DS and Vita really seem to be following what has happened with the DS and PSP. The PSP got less games, but more qualitiy titles, while the DS got more games, less quality titles. However, I think overall, the PSP and DS both ended with around the same amount of worthwhile games and the same is probably going to happen this gen with the 3DS and Vita.

Better get Vita out of that little equation of yours. If 3DS is doing poorly, what to say about Vita?

The 3ds is outselling the DS at this point in its cycle, so yes. People are just making up a bunch of random fear against smart phones. Handheld dedicated gaming devices are selling higher than they ever have. So are consoles. Sure you had the PS2 do 150 million or something last gen, but the gamecube, dreamcast, and original xbox didn't sell a whole lot. This gen is a lot more evenly spread out. The Xbox 360 and PS3 are close to each other and the Wii is ahead. If you count total units sold this console gen compared to last gen it shows more units were sold this gen than last gen already. Handheld gaming devices have sold more units this gen than last gen too. iOS isn't a factor, and you can't use raw sales figures as someone who bought an iphone or android phone might have bought a 3ds. (Which I know people who have, so that proves it right there). This whole impending doom thing on the games market is silly. The 3DS is doing just fine and will be doing even better in the following years. I agree that the VIta is doing acceptable. Especially when you look at its competition.

A "lot" of people bought Vitas for those games, in that those games sold the console to a large group of customers that seems to have been uninterested in it until their releases. No game is going to push millions of sales like Mario, Pokémon, or Monster Hunter, but these games pushed a decent number of units, and likely would have pushed a LOT more if the console weren't so danged expensive. Basically, you can sell a console for $1000 and only be selling 1k a week, and if a single game comes out that pushes that up to 4k for one week, that is VERY significant. With one game you just convinced four times as many people as usual that this console was worth that price. There isn't any one game that's going to convince twenty thousand people to immediately go out and buy a thousand-dollar console, and there isn't any one game that's going to convince a hundred thousand to immediately buy a Vita. It needs a lot of games that push 20-40k at a time, not one single mythical "big game." |
Well then, relatively speaking the games you're citing did not sell to a lot of people. A couple thousand folks are a drop in the bucket. If the strategy is to build up a base drop by drop, it won't be too long until we find that the base has largely evaporated. Because games like Miku and Persona are not "big" by objective standards. Because even those mid-range games will dry up if there are no tentpole titles coming along to make the system more appealing to developers. Because developers and publishers are greedy. And because they are sheep.
Vita only need a Monster Hunter game, some weeabos RPG like Persona series and custom firmware to start sell well.
The custom firmware on PSP was the key to start sell a lot
No Vita hasn't distinguished itself in the only way that really matters for a console fighting for its life and that is in sales. Also it's crazy that they didn't do a price cut this year considering that by the time they have one next year we could be seeing iPad Mini and dozens of other products arriving along with the next Xbox and PS consoles.
Considering Sony is targeting PS3 owners for Vita does anyone here think those owners would be more interested in the next PS console next year or Vita because many will probably be facing that choice. I suspect the Vita will lose out there.
Also one of the things about the poor sales is that it's likely having an affect behind the scenes. For example it's hard to imagine any major Western third parties giving the green light to a Vita exclusive in the last 4 or 5 months. I also suspect that if anything there are probably Vita games getting cancelled that we didn't even know about or worse for Vita they're being moved to 3DS, especially in Japan.
