It appears that Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Mass Effect 3 no longer need to worry about being voted the most disappointing game of 2012. Congratulations, Crapcom.

Mass effect 3 doesn't deserve to be among the most disappointing games of 2012.  It's crazy how people's overreaction about the game ending made it looks like a bad game, when it's not.

Diablo 3, Ninja Gaiden 3 and Max Payne 3 were  more disappointing.

since when is more boom boom and less "real game" something for ninendo fans? it should be bad especially for nintendo fans.

Just look at Revelations they still know how to do it if they want to stick to the newer RE games style.
The question is why dont they make use of that knowledge?

Well its partially the fault of the stupid gamers that want ACTION BOOM BOOM EXPLOSIONS etc.

Its our own fault that we allowed mainstreamers to have the same hobby and now they outnumber the real gamers...

So I guess this is one of the reasons why they make Resident Evil games that are for mainstream people. They outnumber us.

You speak the truth. Casual gamers are a threat against the interests of hardcore gamers by games getting dumbed down.

If ever publishers are a threat against the interest of hardcore gamers. People are allowed to like and buy whatever they want, the fault is totally on publishers who are not listening anymore to their longtime customers and only think about marketshares.

To make a comparison, If I were the manager of a traditional cuisine resturant, what should I do after I discover the Big Mac is the most popular meal in my country? Shold I close my resturant and start selling Big Macs? Or should I try to enstablish my fine product to a priviliged group of costumers? If everyone chooses the former than, in no time traditional cuisine would disappear and you won't find anything but McDonalds and Burger Kings in every street corner.

mjo011 - it's Resident Evil... a survival horror series. If they wanted to make a shooter make a new IP... its fair to critique that aspect.

It used to be a survival horror series. It's not anymore. Critiquing a game, movie, CD or whatever for what it is not is never fair.

I do find it very strange though, that Capcom can find room for light gun games and squad based shooters within the franchise - but not survival horror games.

I agree with you.  Going into any game with expectations and assumptions is grounds for me to ignore a review.  I see it a lot, a reviewer says that they got something different from previous games, then proceeds to trash it based on that comparison.  A reviewer should definitely note the differences, but the actual review should be of -that particular game-, not of previous games in the franchise.

69 on metacritic, Capcom deserves that! To learn not to turn RE into a mix of call of duty + gears of war + god of war(boss battles filled of QTE).

You think PC elitists see me as a casual? No. You don't understand how much time I spend in hunting trophies. I have huge respect for gamers with lots of trophies, especially Platinums. I have 4 Platinums myself, which I'm very proud of.

Absolutely, PC elitists will look at you as a casual. You play PC games on a console and they are called elitists for a reason.

Yeah, they sure are called that for a reason.

I am not talking about "casual" gamers I am talking about mainstream gamers. Thats a totally different thing.  Mainstream gamers are a part of the "hardcore gamers" they dont want challenge (Call of Duty is in no way challenging  only the multiplayer is but thats not thanks to the game it is thanks to strangers you play against)

Mainstreamers just want to own the stuff that is IN and stuff than satisfies their need for simplicity.

You can compare this to movies.  Transformers is a mainstream movie even mentally retarted people can watch this movie and understand it. It works because its WOWing and is playing with the simple parts of our brain.   HUGE  LOUD  = WOW etc.

Then there is stuff like  Prestige or Moon etc.

The Dark Knight is somewhere between. It is a smart movie with substance but also WOWs its viewers.

It is hard to describe I hope you somehow understood what I wanted to say  :)

Good thing that I got a 3DS. Resident Evil: Revelations is wonderful.

You are right. I actually agree with what you wrote. But just like the food gourmet will preach to his friends how cheap and bad it is to go eat at McDonalds and Burger King, we who call ourselves hardcore or sophisticated gamers must preach how bad it is to consume casual and dumbed down games.

You can't blame the publisher just like you can't blame the restaurant manager (because they both love money). You just need to increase awareness among consumers.

So what would it take to bring the RE franchise back into the genre of survival horror anyway?

I've thought about it as someone who worked on RE2, RE3 and RE Veronica back in the 90s, and I suppose my conclusion would be: clunkier controls/limited maneuverability, fewer resources/ammo/save points and correspondingly, fewer enemies/encounters unavoidable conflicts. Also note the reliance upon fixed camera angles to conceal things from the player's view.

That's more or less how the original, pre RE4 games did it and that's not something I'd care to see in 2012, well over 10 years later.

But, on the other hand, you have games like Alan Wake that work pretty effectively as current, non-dated horror/survival games through the effective use of atmosphere, deliberately designed sections where the player is vulnerable, somewhat limited resources, and scattered check points/safe zones.

Maybe I should just finish RE Revelations since of all recent RE games, it felt more like a survival horror game than any other.
