Here's the deal.

Exercise is good for your health, but it's boring so nobody wants to do it.

Video games are fun, but their bad for your health while you sit on your ass.

Wii Fit is healthier than normal video games while being more interesting than normal exercise. That's the appeal. The comparison with DDR is valid, but DDR is targeted at younger folk who want to dance in clubs, while Wii Fit is targeted at the whole family. That's why it will beat DDR.

Well I see some decent point's in here, it just doesn't seem to add up to me. I see people regularly put this in there "most anticipated" games area and the connection just doesn't click xD I stay pretty active on a daily basis, and I usually use load screens and such to do pushups, sit ups and what not.

So Wii fit is being primarily looked forward to in regards to entertaining workout equipment o.O? And if so, do you think it's impact will be enormous in America?

I mean if it helps get the job done I'm all for it :D, I'm pretty big on healthy lifestyle, I just don't quite see the charm here lol.

That makes absolute sense :P I put together that answer in my head while reading some of the other posts, I just have a different take on excersize I guess xD

WiiFit will become a posterchild (one way or another) for the Blue Ocean Strategy. A perfect example of a company expanding into a market that they never had presence in before, and thusly expanding their marketshare to be much greater than their competition can possibly follow.

Basically, if Nintendo can get people to buy Wii for health reasons, and then get hooked on games, like they did with mental exercises with the DS, it will give them access to a MUCH larger market-base than 360 or PS3 could ever hope to reach. This is the very essence of Blue Ocean ideals; instead of direct competition, reaching out to new untapped markets and basically monopolizing them thus expanding beyond your competitors, while they continue to fight over the same small marketshare.

the game has massive casual appeal (wiisports, brainage) and will likely follow those sales patterns into the tens of millions sold LTD. It won't be front loaded like halo 3 if for no other reason than nintendo can't manufacture enough units to have a massive front loaded launch.

personally, i'm really excited for this game. for one - i like games that make you move around like DDR. for two - because my gf (who hates video games for the most part) is excited for wiifit. anything that gets her to enjoy my hobby is a good thing to me. for three - it is unique. i think there are some arcade based skiing games that are similar to the wiifit skiing games but for a console it's like no other game on the market. new=exciting.

How can you not see the potential? Wii Fit needs to be compared to the likes of Brain Training, Nintendogs and Wii Sports. Such casual titles can be difficult to appreciate using a hardcore criteria of success. Nevertheless, they continue to dominate the gaming charts for months, even years after release. I can assure you, Wii Fit will be a huge commercial success.

From a more traditional gaming perspective I am interested in the potential of the Wii balance board. The skiing and snowboarding minigames in particular look awesome and the possibilities are endless. I'm hoping the success of Wii Fit and the creative possibilities afforded by the balance board will help attract more third party developers.

It's true that this game has little appeal to people who don't need a fun motivation to get physical activity, but how many people find physical activity to be fun in and of itself? If the numbers were large, the developed world wouldn't have a looming obesity problem.

I can totally understand how a person like you wouldn't be interested. Since you get good exercise on your own, you'd rather go for an experience which is purely focused on fun when you sit down to game.

I get a fair amount of physical activity in my ordinary day as well, but I'm still considering getting Wii Fit simply because the rest of my family doesn't. I'd like my siblings to be healthy, so if I think they'll use it I may buy Wii Fit.

Very true :P I'm very partial to martial arts, but my family and such isn't lol. I'm definitely hoping on it's success, I just kept looking at it from more of a hardcore gamer perspective, I suppose in regards to brain age and such I can see it's appeal :P Thank you all for the input XD

As others have already mentioned, turning what many regard as a chore into a fun game can only be a good thing. One thing that often goes unmentioned is that unlike traditional exercise equipment, the balance board can sense whether or not the user is applying the correct form. It instructs the user how to perform the excercises properly and using on screen data, allows the user to monitor their form. I think that this is a significant advantage over traditional equipment that Nintendo need to emphasise more, particularly in the interests of safety.

Anyone here own one? I'm just curious if it's able to keep people's attention over the long term and if it's actually helping people lose weight. And no I'm not asking in order to bash the Wii, I am actually pretty curious.
