The iPhone 5 launched in more countries. And the iPhone 4S did not launch on carriers like Verizon or Sprint.

The only difference in launch countries between the 4s and the 5 is that the 4s didn't launch in Hong Kong or Singapore, and I can't imagine these being very large markets anyway.. And your second sentence is false, the 4s did launch on Verison and Sprint

All his sentences are false... for now.

Same countries, same phone operators, etc... MORE SALES!!!

Thanks everyone for the clarifications. Regardless of how you slice it, that is still an insane number of units sold. What's sad though is that this is yet another nail in the dedicated portable markets coffin.

Walked by the Apple store during launch in Toronto and it was pandemonium... People waiting, laughing, crying(joy).

Then I went to best buy and no one was there buying iPhones. I asked them how come and they said that masses just don't want to buy iPhones from non Apple stores on day 1.

Apparently people who buy the iPhone on day 1 are in it for the "Apple" experience. Very cult like if you think about it...

"Cult like" lol...

Are people who line up at midnight to get videogames "cult like" as well then, according to you?

No because they want the product and not the 'likeminded' experience.

People who line up for a product obviously want the product, but a bonus of that is lining up with like-minded people who are also interested in he same product as you

There is no difference in people lining up for video games and people lining up for Apple products

Lol. Yes, the iPhone 4S did launch in Verizon and Sprint (I was thinking of the 4). That was my bad. But you can't tell me I was wrong when I said it launched in more countries. Yes, you can argue that those sales are not very significant, but I'm sure they accounted for something.

Honestly, I'm more interested in what the sales will be like after the rabid Apple fans buy their phones ...

While my personal experience is not representative, I know very few average people who are looking to upgrade their iPhone 4 or 4S for an iPhone 5; and it is these kind of people who have bought the vast majority of iPhones. If 1/3 of the people who would have previously upgraded for the sake of upgrading decide to stick with their current phone it may not show up in day one sales but it would show up.

Well, the iPhone 5 is projected to sell over 58 million units by the end of the year, so not only rabid apple fans will be getting one I can assure you

Also, my friend has a 4s and when he wasn't planning on upgrading, but when he saw my iPhone 5 he said that be was going to get one. Word of mouth about the iPhone 5 will be INSANELY high

Not as Big as Cod...

Still BIG!

Projecting sales is counting you chickens before they've hatched ...

I don't doubt there will be a ton of upgrades, but a modest reduction in people upgrading could have a noticeable impact on sales. Hypothetically speaking, if 45 million people bought an iPhone 5 rather than 58 million it would still be a massively popular phone but its sales would disapoint.

Apple can and will certainly sell more, question is if it can regain is US lead over Samsung's Galaxy S3. :) Personally, if I was an Apple user, idk why anyone would upgrade if they have the 4S. I don't see enough to pay the price. If you have the 4, then you're close to upgrade anyways and you get a decently faster phone, better camera, and Siri.

My friend has a 4s and we were comparing it to my iPhone 5 earlier. There is a HUGE difference. Regarding upgrading, I'm pretty sure a 4s user could upgrade to an iPhone 5 early for a relatively small fee of ~£100

Do you know how many Galaxy s3's have been sold in the states?

Huge difference is way over doing it.

Taller screen, LTE (if you have it in your carrier), faster WiFi, and... what else? The general performance shouldn't be really noticeable and the software is the same. There is no other differences that I can think of. To me, those couple things are definitely not worh $100 let alone £100.

My 4S friends are sticking with their phones until next revision at this point. My couple 4 friends are upgrading as the camera and performace changes are actually noticeable and you get Siri.

Not sure on Galaxy S3's total, but I know just a month or so ago it was the king of US, surpassing the iPhone in total userbase. Meaning that iPhone5 would not only have to sell to 100% of Apples current base, but also get a lot of Android/S3 users to switch (highly unlikely). Meaning that not only is iOS not even close to Android in marketshare, but as a single phone, iPhone is no longer king. Just ties into the other thread where I was talking about the lack of innovation in iOS6. It seems like Apple is starting to just become a player vs a leader/innovator. I want innovation because I want to see the market continue to exponentially grow!
