3DS launched in March... it's different.

Sure not all people will succeed in this, but some will. I mean, what will happen if lil Timmy doesn't get his Wii U on Christmas??

March release vs. Holiday Season release definitely makes a difference.

The other thing I think is that a home console with shared play potential can have elevated value during Thanksgiving and Christmas type gatherings. To this day, my Wii, Kinect, or both end up getting played most when there are people over and activity sort of leans to playing Wii Sports or Kinect Sports for some good times.

That would be a stupid someone that bought it because Walmart is still taking pre-orders online for Wii U bundles.

Remember when the Wii launched? What were those things going for on the gray market, like $700 or something? Actually, yeah—Fahey did this analysis after the 2006 holidays and found the price, for a pre-order listing on eBay, spiked at $707, almost three times its MSRP. (That's not counting this jackhole, trying to sell one plus a PS3 for six grand. God, those were dumb days.)

Well, anyway, as preorders are now being taken for its successor, Wii U, and retailers are one-by-one selling out the deluxe-o model, speculators are already on eBay trying to recapture that magic from six years ago. This guy's offering his preorder for $900, which is only two-and-a-half times the MSRP of $349. You won't get it day of release, of course, because he's got to pick it up and mail it to you all the way from Alabama. But hey, since he listed it at $900, it qualifies for 18 months financing with Bill Me Later, so there's that.

Restoring OP, as lilbroex will be out a few days...

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

This kind of thing is really a shame, as it leaves manufacturers (and us) unable to determine actual interest. It turns into something like a stocks manipulation situation. Would preorders have sold out on their own, or is this a function of re-sellers soaking up those preorder slots? If it's because of re-sellers, then they've essentially created their own second-hand market at much higher prices. I would love to know the percentage of preorders that were actually placed for the purpose of re-sale. I'm guessing at least 20%, possibly higher if professional re-sellers have methods to get around limits.

The bad part is that most of them can simply cancel if the manufacturer ramps up production, leaving a surplus to deal with.

Pretty much, yeah.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

I would say, considering the economic climate, that more consoles than ever are being pre-ordered only for resale purposes.  I'd guess that the number is higher than 20%, perhaps even as high as 33%.  1 out of every 3 pre-orders resold isn't too unbelievable, as far as I'm concerned.

i believe the seller ended it because that's what you can read there "This listing was ended by the seller because the item is no longer available". if someone bought it there would be only "This listing has ended. "
