Most of those wii sales are meaningless, many people who bought a wii got 1-2 games then left it to gather dust, the big money is in the software.

Plus this time around nintendo don't have such a powerful feature up their sleave.

Many people bought an X360 to watch it turn on the 3 red lights and left it in the garbage can.

What you do with your console doesn't matter, its and hardware unit sold. Oh, and Wii also sold more software that PS3 or 360.

You can try to spin that the way you want baby, Wii is this gen's king, although a very peculiar gen.

Meaningless ? In your wet dreams.

Nobody left the 360 in the garbage can when it RROD since all the faulty units came with a three year warranty.  Also I guess you haven't looked at software sales since the 360 is the clear winner when it comes to software sales this generation with the highest game to console software ration this generation and third highest all time behind the orginal Xbox and PS2.

They do nothing but laugh, right now the ps360 looks alot more tasty to the consumer than the Wii U. Sony are going to drop the price of the ps3 to 199 when the Wii U launches, the 360 will get a price drop too. They both have an incredible and cheap games library, excellent and proven online. The Wii U has alot of competition even before Sony/ Microsofts next gen consoles launch.

Launch between $299-$399 with solid launch titles.

I know how Sony/MS could totally fuck up the wiiU sales!.. by listening to their rabid fans of course!! they should release a super HD console that does 4K graphics!!! and be 30-40x!! more powerful than the wiiU !!

Listen to your fans MS / SONY !!! release a very high-tech console!! do it make it happen!! guaranteed win!! =)

BluGamer has already disclosed the winning strategy...  I really hope Sony and MS go in this direction.  :)

Anyways, I think Nintendo is impervious from being Dreamcasted because of the strength of Nintendo's first party IPs.  Diehard Nintendo fans alone will ensure that the system is a success (see the Gamecube).  Nintendo only needs to appeal to the core PS360 crowd (which they're clearly trying to do) AND grab that expanded audience.

If they're successful, there's nothing Sony or MS can do.  Nintendo is in such a great position, they just have to execute.

A year head start may not determine the outcome of the "console war" but it certainly is a huge advantage ...

Taking the Wii out of consideration for a moment, consider what would have happened between the PS3 and XBox 360 had the PS3 launched a year earlier (all else being equal). Essentially the mistakes that Sony made that Microsoft capitalized on (high initial price tag and difficulty to develop for) would have been addressed around the time the XBox 360 had launched, and the problems that Microsoft corrected before the PS3 launched (poor launch availability and the RROD) would have easily been capitalized on by Sony.

To put numbers to the effect, Sony would have probably had an 8 million unit lead and every year there would be 2 million PS3 systems sold at the expense of the XBox 360. The result would be (something like) the PS3 having sold 85 to 90 million units today while the XBox 360 would have only sold 45 to 50 million units.

While it is difficult to really predict these things, between the Wii U being (reasonably) affordable, having what looks like a pretty strong launch library, being (likely) a very high build quality that probably won't be prone to over-heating, and being conventional enough technology that it can probably be manufactured in high volumes, it does seem like the Wii U will have a fairly clean launch; and be free of any serious errors. In my opinion this puts massive pressure on Sony and Microsoft to not screw up because any mistake they make could put them very far behind.

I agreed that Sony is in a really bad situation, but I don't think MS is.

MS can easily afford a big loss with the next Xbox which means they can make a powerful system with a more advance Kinect, which could potentially mean the new xbox could become the next big system for the casuals (the Kinect may not have sold like the Wii but the casuals still loved that thing), there's also the fact that MS seems to be focusing more on media entertainment, something that the casuals also loved. If MS plays the cards right they could attract both the casuals and the hardcores.

Sony on the other hand is in big trouble. With all of their recent financial losses they can't afford a big loss in hardware without taking a major risk, that means no powerful machine this time. The problem here it's that Sony made themselves a staple by being "the most powerful console this gen" something that attracted a lot of people, so if they make a console that's just slightly more powerful than the Wii U then Sony could potentially lose all those people who buy the most powerful console (this may seemed weird, but I know a lot of people who bought a PS3 over the 360 because the PS3 is more powerful, not knowing anything about the Sony's first party games).

This really isn't about being in a good position though ...

Almost all systems have problems when launched, and it usually takes 6 to 18 months to correct these problems. The system that launches first has the opportunity to correct their own problems before the competition enters the market, build up a large userbase, and then benefit from any mistakes their competition makes.

Microsoft can be in a great financial position and still screw up. In theory they could be designing a highly powerful system (like the XBox 360 was) with a controller that has a touch-screen (like Wii U) and has built in Kinect. While this looks great on paper, the system would need to retail for $500 even with Microsoft losing a significant amount per system sold and sales would be slow because of this. A completely different mistake they could make would be producing a system that was modestly more powerful than the XBox 360 with built in Kinect and, while the system would be very affordable, it may not produce enough of a benefit over what the XBox 360 already is to convince people to buy into it. Finally, Microsoft could produce an overall very appealing piece of hardware and sell it for a reasonable price but may not have given third party publishers enough notice to compensate for longer development cycles and the system could have a massive gaming drought for the first 12 to 18 months.

What I'm trying to say is there are hundreds of mistakes Microsoft can make that are completely unrelated to their current financial position ...

I know a bunch of people who did and moved along to buy a PS3 or PC because their consoles kept frying at the 2nd and 3rd console repaired by Microsoft. But those are kind of isolated cases of some people, like the ones who left their Wii's in the closet.

Also,

Wii LTD software: 804.34 Million

X360 LTD Software: 660.53 Million

PS3 LTD software: 573.70 Million

The clear winner is clear. And in overall software it ranks as the fifth console, behind the Wii of course.

And the original xbox is the 12th lol.

The original XBox 360 warranty wasn't three years ...

The original XBox 360 warranty was 90 days, they extended it to 1 year after the RROD problems were causing huge consumer backlash from people having to pay hundreds of dollars to have their couple month old system repaired, and then Microsoft took a $1 Billion loss to extend the warranty to 3 years.

A dreamcast situation is pretty much out of the question for Nintendo.  Sony hyped up PS2 to kill initial sales of dreamcast which hurt an already struggling Sega.  However, after PS2 came out and people saw that it wasn't "Toy Story Graphics" like it was claimed, Dreamcast saled picked up.  But it was too little too late for Sega, as they had botched their previous console generation as well.  If anyone is in danger of getting Dreamcasted this time around, its Sony.

Check out my Youtube Let's Play channel here.

Because the ps3 sold badly that dosn't mean ps4 will fail like ps3

PS4 - over 100 millions let's say 120m
Xbox One - 70m
Wii U - 25m

Vita - 15m if it will not get Final Fantasy Kingdoms Heart and Monster Hunter 20m otherwise
3DS - 80m
