what might steal a bit of Wii U's attention (among regular game related website users) could be a short demo rail of "ingame graphics" of games in development for PS4 at TGS, but I doubt Sony will show something for PS4 prior to E3 2013
No they dont need to, im prety sure they want to watch and learn about Nintendo WiiU Pad controller. IF Nintendo success with this controller M$ and Sony will make a move of course they already had a blue print for nextgen thing.
So it depends with Nintendo and WiiU.
release their new consoles at the same price in 2013.

All they have to do is be released... That'll cut into those superstitious sales of the Wii U that we practically know nothing about for next year.

Just release consoles that are better than the Wii U. MS and Sony already have all the 3rd party and hardcore gamer support, so they just need get the pricing right. Oh and while they are waiting to release the bigger and better consoles, put some price cuts on the PS360 around the time Wii U releases.

They got any other 1st party sellers? CoD could - and will - move millions of systems. But will it move enough systems to topple Wii U's one year head start?! No. New Ip's is something Nintendo has as well. NintendoLand. ZombiU. MS can take a bigger loss than Sony and Nintendo, and could work great if the system can offer something the other 2 can't (superior graphics - like the leap from xbox to xbox360, or something else entirely) All 3 consoles will have multiplayer. Wii U's got the Miiverse, which will be a whole new social experience that will enhance multiplayer - and something MS will have to match. Getting a streaming service would/could work wonders for xbox720 Kinect has sold 20m units, but has rather poor software sales as far as I've understood it. So that's probably not a big selling point. |

You are talking about only the last generation, why not talk about the two generations before it. How much Nintendo's hardware were moved by their 1st party games? To me, only consumers decide which console they choose, otherwise PS3 would be on top again.
As long as sony and microsoft both make their consoles powerful enough to make sure the wii u can only get gimped ports they should be good with core gamers who aren't huge fans of nintendo exclusives. If WiiU gets decent ports though I don't see it not coming in first place next gen.
As for casuals. Nintendo will be more affected if gaming continues to improve on tablets and smartphones than by the nextbox/ps4. I don't think the wii u will ever see sales similar to the 2007/2008 wii but if the 720/ps4 aren't significantly more powerful it should be able to have much better legs than the wii.
Microsoft had a very good idea with introducing the kinect to try to steal casuals, but the result was rather meh for most games. Had they waited and launched the kinect alongside the nextbox after they fixed the delay issues, it would have significantly hurt wii u sales. But as it stands many casuals probably remember the kinect for its unresponsive games and that might influence them to not care about kinect 2.0.
