Forums - Nintendo - Wii U: The price is right or is $299 the new $599?

I never have bought a console for over $299 (PS3) and even though I am getting the deluxe version, it feels like I am buying a black $299 Wii U with Nintendoland and some cool stands (and a premium service but that's not really notable.) I know it's getting awesome games and I don't intend to wait 3 years just to save $50.

Solid price. Skeptical as to whether it really is next gen tech, but who cares I suppose if it has the library to back up the price.

Nah, $300/$350 isn't as bad as $599, but it's still a bit more expensive than I believe it should be. I think it should have been $250 for the regular, $300 for the deluxe, but an extra $50 isn't the end of the world IMO. Now If the console was $400 THEN it would be equally catasrophic to Sony's $599USD. But if you put it into perspective, you can get a brand new console, with its new gamepad, for only $50 more than the 6 year old PS3, which is weaker, and does not have a tablet controller. Plus, many people won't have to buy extra controllers, as the console supports Wiimotes, which many already own.

The price is right within the range that I predicted ($250-$350), though I was hoping it would be on the lower end of that range, not the higher end. I will still probably fork out $350 for the deluxe Wii U, but I am none too pleased about it, and I will probably only get 3 games with it to start instead of the 4-5 I originally planned. While I wouldn't exactly call the price "too high," it's dangerously close to that. Now, if the graphics are better than I am expecting, the controller impresses me, and NSMB U and Pikmin blow me away, I might take that statement back.

It's difficult to compare Nintendo and Sony/Microsoft directly because Nintendo is solely a gaming company and doesn't have profits from other divisions to fall back on. So if what TheShape31 is saying about the costs is true, we can still somewhat excuse Nintendo for being so darn needy for profits.

On the other hand, I've heard people bring up this point for years and as true as it is, I can't imagine how much money Nintendo must make from their exorbitant first-party software sales (which m/s can only dream of mirroring) and of course... their merchandising (which m/s can't even begin to do, since they haven't invested into franchises like Nintendo has).

I think it would be "nice" for Nintendo to drop the price of Wii U on a sheer "I am a consumer who wants cheap things" impulse. But we all know why Nintendo had to cut the price of 3DS, and I hope that Nintendo doesn't have to reach that point with Wii U. Because if Wii U doesn't do well from the onset, Nintendo may be one step closer to becoming just another software company...

I don't think we'll ever have to worry about Nintendo being a software only company. Even during their lowest selling years (N64/Gamecube) they made substantially more profit than Sony, though it is very likely this was due to their handhelds more than their consoles. From my perspective, Nintendo has the most loyal fanbase (perhaps not as vocal as Sony's over the years, but likely much more loyal). I don't mind Nintendo making profit on their consoles (in fact, I wish Sony would take a similar approach instead of their compulsion for bleeding money) I just wish they would give more back to their fanbase in some manner, whether that comes in the form of price cuts on their system or games, new ips, fostering better relations with third parties (even if it means funding their dev costs, it's not like they can't afford it) or anything really besides letting their system die an early death.

I think their Club Nintendo Points/Rewards/whatever system is their way of trying to give back to their fanbase. I avoid wearing anything that screams to the world I'M A GAMER but this is still pretty nice: https://club.nintendo.com/rewards-details/a/22004.do

On the other hand, I would feel like Nintendo loves us more if Nintendo of America didn't make us jump through elaborate, painfull, horrible hoops just to get an amazing AAA RPG available for American consoles. I shake my fist full of money at you, NoA.

What Metallicube said, I'm with him. But more inclined to buy the console 'cause of 4 and half games that's already coming with it, one wich is on the horizon! ;)

I pesonally think that the price,is right on the money. It's not to expensive.

ok just saw some prices at zavvi now, prices are already lower than rrp.

premium 275 pound
basic 230 pound
premium pack zombi u edition 300 pound

so you get the premium pack with zombie u for the official price without zombie u. that's nice, maybe you can get it even cheaper at other online retailers.

This was not posted here yet? Should be on OP. As you see, Wii U is not expesive at all.

Unadjusted launch prices:

I don't understand those numbers. Why is the PS3 cheaper now with inflation than when it launched? And how is the n64 a few hundred dollars cheaper than the PSX?
