I don't think we'll ever have to worry about Nintendo being a software only company. Even during their lowest selling years (N64/Gamecube) they made substantially more profit than Sony, though it is very likely this was due to their handhelds more than their consoles. From my perspective, Nintendo has the most loyal fanbase (perhaps not as vocal as Sony's over the years, but likely much more loyal). I don't mind Nintendo making profit on their consoles (in fact, I wish Sony would take a similar approach instead of their compulsion for bleeding money) I just wish they would give more back to their fanbase in some manner, whether that comes in the form of price cuts on their system or games, new ips, fostering better relations with third parties (even if it means funding their dev costs, it's not like they can't afford it) or anything really besides letting their system die an early death. |
I think their Club Nintendo Points/Rewards/whatever system is their way of trying to give back to their fanbase. I avoid wearing anything that screams to the world I'M A GAMER but this is still pretty nice: https://club.nintendo.com/rewards-details/a/22004.do
On the other hand, I would feel like Nintendo loves us more if Nintendo of America didn't make us jump through elaborate, painfull, horrible hoops just to get an amazing AAA RPG available for American consoles. I shake my fist full of money at you, NoA.
