Forums - Nintendo - REAL official specs are here. Lets dissect !GPGPU! !2GB RAM!

Wii U specs look decent imo. Provided that the gpu is the rumoured 4870, and based on what developers have been saying it has a pretty strong gpu so i think is correct.

RAM is decent and they always have an option to make more of it available for applications.

Not sure whats going on with the cpu though given current rumors and what developers have been saying.

Price is really good! Il probably pick up one this year!

You can use SD cards and USB HDD's to increase the storage.

You can use any standard USB hard drive?

Yes.

No, they won't.   Law of diminishing returns hits pretty heavily after 2 GB on a home console.

Hope I'm not asking for too much but could you go into a little more detail as to what you mean by this?

Once you get to a certain point, you no longer gain any benefit from having more RAM.   Say, for example, your stage, textures and gamecode take up 1 GB...what benefit do you get from having 2 GBs?   Say you max out your rendering capabilities with 2 GB's of RAM.  Another GB won't do much for you.

These are very simplistic examples simply to make it easy to grasp my point.  Actual details are much more technical.

This is further exasperated by the proliferation of texture streaming.

Not bad. 1gb for the OS seems high for a console. Does anyone know what the Xbox 360 and PS3 use for their OS?

The storage seems very low. it must be Flash Memory. I'd rather have a big system with a hard drive than a tiny system with Flash built in. Call me crazy but I'd prefer one big drive instead of having to add storage from the outside later. But it's not that big of a deal, and not a deal breaker.

Hard drive space is garbage? Or am I missing something here?

Both are between 40 - 60 MB right now.

It is possible that extra RAM is needed outside of the games for the proper functioning of the Wii U tablet controller.

Today is ~20MB for 360 and ~50MB for PS3.

Yes, but not a full 1 GB.   Not even close.  The GamePad just receives a video stream.   And it has its own internal memory anyway.

Thanks.

Hadn't heard they cut down the X360 to just 20 MB.

Do you people really expect the 720 and PS4 to have 8GB of memory? Oh wow haha. Most desktops don't have 8gb right now. You can game perfectly fine on 4gb even on Windows 7. 8Gb just adds more room for comfort. Heck 16gb of ram in a desktop has been shown to REDUCE fps in certain situations. When the desktop has too much memory than it needs. Higher speed memory > Amount usually. 4gb of high speed memory will go a long way over 8gb of slower memory. Of course there's a huge difference between 512mb and 2gb of memory. Next gen consoles will be fine with 2-3gb. Even 4 might be overkill.
